Tom Wopat, the “Dukes of Hazzard’’ star charged with groping an actress during rehearsal for a Waltham musical, released a song Friday from his forthcoming album that includes references to a gun and taking a woman back.
Wopat’s camp released the song, titled “Till Death Do Us Part,’’ on Pledge Music, a website promoting his new record, titled “Wopat.’’
An excerpt of the song begins with Wopat strumming his guitar before the vocals kick in.
“Heading down to Fort Worth, I got my gun in my hand,’’ Wopat croons on the track. “Ain’t thought of nothing yet, but I come up with a plan to take her back.’’
A statement posted above a link to the tune describes it as “a very special song for Tom’’ that he wrote in the 1990s.
In another recording of the song uploaded previously to YouTube, Wopat sings, “Well, if I can’t have her, nobody else can. I’ll make her change her mind, she’ll take me back again. No one can read the words that are etched upon my heart. We were meant to ride as one, till death do us part.’’
Wopat, 65, was slated to appear on stage in August during a limited run of the Reagle Music Theatre’s production of “42nd Street’’ at Waltham High School, but he was forced to bow out after his arrest on Aug. 2 on charges of grabbing a female costar’s buttocks during a rehearsal and possessing cocaine in his 1996 Ford Bronco.
Wopat’s publicist has said the actor “firmly denies’’ the groping allegation and is also “taking personal time to address his ongoing struggle with substance abuse’’ in the wake of his arrest.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains free on $1,000 bail, with another court date set for Sept. 26.
The showbiz icon earned a permanent place in the annals of television history with his star turn as Luke Duke in the long-running “Dukes of Hazzard’’ show. He also earned Tony nominations for his roles in “Annie Get Your Gun’’ in 1999 and “Catered Affair’’ in 2008.
