‘Iron Chef’ comes to Corkscrew

Photo courtesy of CORKSCREW SALOON “Iron Chef” judge and Italian cuisine expert Mario Rizzotti will make appearances at Corkscrew Saloon in Medina Nov. 7-8.

Every week when I write my column, I am all in and very invested in the topic. Sometimes, my column is about something food related that I have always loved; sometimes it is about something new I just discovered. Every now and then, it is one of those “shout-it-from-the-mountaintop” moments.
This is one of those columns.
I learned last week that Chef Ryan Marino and Corkscrew Saloon will be hosting a very special wine dinner with “Iron Chef” Judge Mario Rizzotti. Rizzotti is an acclaimed television personality and Italian culinary expert.
He most recently served as judge on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and was called to judge Iron Chefs like Mario Batali, Michael Symon, Marc Forgione, Bobby Flay, Masaharu Morimoto and more.
OK, so if he is good enough to judge some of the most amazing chefs in the world, then I really need to meet him! Even better for those who are impressed by Italian accents, he is clearly the real deal.
“Iron Chef America” has always been my favorite cooking show. These guys are at the absolute top of their profession and do things with food that most of us cannot even imagine. They take the art of food to new heights.
This is a huge star and famous Italian cuisine expert coming to town to cook for us and to tell us more about authentic Italian food. One thing he said in an interview I saw was that people come back from Italy and say how great the food was there, but it just is not the same here. He says it is all about having the actual ingredients that they use in Italy. Authentic ingredients “made” in Italy, not “imported” Italy.
The wine dinner, taking pace on two dates, Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., is called the “4 The Love of Italian Food Tour and Wine Pairing.” It is an event put on by “Iron Chef America” and only comes to a few select restaurants in each state. It will feature five courses all paired with amazing Italian wines. The cost is $110 per person with very limited seating, so I recommend calling the restaurant now if you want a seat. You can also purchase your tickets online at www.thecorkscrewsaloon.com. I reserved mine already and really cannot wait!
Here is a the menu and wine pairings. It will start with a meet-and-greet.
First course is an Italian Cocktail, “Prosecco Amore Mio”, which is Italian Prosecco, FABBRI Amarena cherry juice and a cherry. This will be served with Crostini con Burrata e Birra Spalmabile, which is Crostini with cream filled mozzarella and Italian spreadable beer.
Dinner will begin with the “Antipasti” (starter). This will be Insalata di Fregola e frutti di mare, which is seafood (shrimp, squid, and mussels) with Sardinian Fregola pasta, raisins, capers, pine nuts, and herbs.
“Primi” (first course) will be Gnudi con Radicchio e Speck, which is ricotta dumplings, served with smoked prosciutto, pine nuts, and finished with 12 year old balsamic vinegar of Modena.
This will be followed by “Per rinfrescare il Palato” or palate cleanser. This will be Vanilla Gelato topped with 25-year-aged balsamic.
The “Secondi”, or second course, will be “Brasato al Vino Rosso”, which is beef braised in Barolo wine served with Tuscan kale and farro.
And for “Dolci”, or dessert, “Tiramisu alle Mandorle”, which is tiramisu with almonds.
An amazing authentic Italian meal prepared by an “Iron Chef” Judge and TV personality at one of our area’s top restaurants and paired with fine Italian wines. I am counting the days.
This is just one of many event nights that Corkscrew has lined up for this fall. There is the Delicato Family Vineyards Wine Dinner on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. featuring a Fall Candied Beet and Honey Sriracha salad paired with Noble Vines Pinot grigio 152, followed by Autumn Bisque paired with Black stallion Chardonnay. Then, Braised Wild Boar in a Merlot reduction paired with Noble Vines Old World Merlot 181. Next course is Wild Ohio Jambalaya (sausage trio, apple duck, cognac pheasant, and garlic buffalo) paired with Z Alexander brown Multi County Pinot. Dessert is Flourless Chocolate Coffee Torte with Almond Butter Cream, paired with Black Stallion Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine dinner is $65 per person, and will also sell out quickly.
