A man died early Friday morning in Springfield after a police pursuit in which he crashed his car while trying to get off Interstate 91, State Police said.
The man had been driving as fast as 100 miles per hour, and State Police were just beginning their pursuit at 12:30 a.m. when the man crashed on the Exit 2 ramp, State Police said in a statement.
The man was taken to the Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. State Police did not release his name.
Connecticut state troopers were chasing the man on Interstate 91, but they stopped when they reached the state border, Massachusetts State Police said.
Troopers in Connecticut notified Massachusetts State Police. A trooper in Longmeadow saw the car speed by at 100 miles per hour. The trooper tried to stop the car, but the driver refused, State Police said.
Less than a minute later, as troopers began their pursuit, the man tried to get off Exit 2, lost control of his car, and crashed, State Police said. There was no one else in the car.
State Police in both states are investigating the chase and the crash.
