It’s happening again. The Red Sox are making mistakes on the basepaths as though they’re determined to do so.
Through Tuesday, the 5-1 Sox led the majors with six outs on the bases. Those are essentially unforced errors, such as being doubled off or thrown out advancing.
It does not count the three times they’ve been thrown out on attempted steals. Only the Pittsburgh Pirates have done that more often.
The Sox were out on the bases 81 times last season, 11 more than any other team. Under manager John Farrell and the previous coaching staff, such outs were practically celebrated as a sign of aggressiveness.
New manager Alex Cora would prefer to see a greater value placed on outs. But still, the Sox keep running with blinders on.
“It’s in their DNA,’’ Cora said Tuesday. “It’s hard. I don’t want to take away their aggressiveness but we’ve got to get better and they know it.’’
A prime example came in the fifth inning on Tuesday night at Miami. In a 1-1 game, Rafael Devers led off with a double. But when Christian Vazquez, grounded back to the mound, Devers tried for third and was easily thrown out.
“That wasn’t a good one,’’ Cora said.
In the eighth inning, Jackie Bradley Jr. was on third with one out when Eduardo Nunez grounded to third. Bradley went to the plate and was thrown out, catcher Chad Wallach making a quick tag.
Bradley was told to run on contact.
“We’ll take that,’’ Cora said.
Ceremonial welcome
The Sox will open the gates at Fenway Park at 12:05 p.m. on Thursday for the home opener and asked fans to be in their seats at 1:15 p.m. for the ceremonies.
The players on both teams will be introduced before a unit from Hanscom Air Force Base presents the colors. R&B artist Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters will perform the national anthem.
Four F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 134th Fighter Squadron of the Vermont Air National Guard are scheduled for a flyover.
Prior to the game, at 9 a.m., 44 Air Force recruits will have their swearing-in ceremony on the field.
Cora is excited for the home opener.
“My mom will be there, so that will be great. It’s going to be a special one,’’ he said. “And the way they played, it’s going to be great for the fans to see them finally after a great road trip . . . Thursday’s going to be very special.’’
