Murphy boosts Medfield in OT

Medfield freshman attackman Owen Murphy netted the winner with 2:41 left in overtime Tuesday night to lift the reigning Division 2 state champions past Tri-Valley League rival and reigning Division 3 champion Dover-Sherborn, 15-14.

“That was a great high school lacrosse game,’’ Medfield coach John Isaf said. “[Dover-Sherborn] played hard and inspired, they were down some key guys, other guys for them stepped up. I can’t say what an awesome job they did coaching and playing hard and believing that they could win.

“I mean they had it, and we just made one more play than they did. D-S is a great program, well-coached, great kids, a lot of talent. They pushed us to the edge.’’

Senior Kevin McCordic led the Warriors with six goals, including a snipe from 25 yards out with just 8.6 seconds left before halftime that gave Medfield an 8-7 advantage at the break. Junior Jack Cahill added four goals and Murphy finished with two.

“We went with [Murphy] a little bit more in the second half,’’ Isaf said. “Usually it’s Mark Nevins and Owen kind of sharing time. We just liked what we saw, it was just a gut instinct to leave him in and see what he could do, and he delivered.’’

Medfield led, 4-3, after one quarter and maintained a one-goal cushion at halftime. Dover-Sherborn took a 14-12 lead after three frames but the Medfield defense held the Raiders scoreless in the final quarter, thanks in large part to the play of senior goalie Kyle Gately. Cahill and senior Nigel Reiff scored in the fourth to send the game to overtime.

“They really stepped up, especially in the fourth quarter,’’ Isaf said of his defense. “Kyle Gately made a great save at the end there to give us the ball and give us the last chance there. They did a great job in the fourth quarter.’’

Nobles 13, Brewster Academy 12 — Senior Watson Cheek scored the winning goal on an assist from sophomore brother Hayden Cheek, his sixth assist of the game.

Essex Tech 12, St. Mary’s 7 — Senior Dan McCormack led the Hawks (6-2) with four goals.
