To the Editor:
Thank your Mayor Hanwell for thinking of the residents on South Court Street. The new bike lane (a white stripe on the existing pavement) will serve the estimated 100-plus bike riders who annually use the street from Lafayette or Sturbridge. The 5-foot wide lanes on both sides of the street will be identified by a stripe of paint indicating the lanes.

Patrick Patton (city engineer) has indicated that the bike lanes will prohibit parking along South Court Street. I am not sure that is in the best interest of the people who live there. I believe that bikers should have a safe place to travel and putting a stripe down an existing road does not, in any way, make the road safer for automobiles and bikes to use together. Will automobiles be prohibited in crossing the bike lane stripe? Will there be driving violation tickets issued?

I guess if people who live on South Court Street are planning a family reunion, they better advise their relatives to carpool.
