Agon Ltd., the chief organizer for FIDE’s world championship cycle, has announced that the next world championship match between Magnus Carlsen and a to-be-determined opponent will be played in New York City. The Agon news release does not include the exact location and mentions only a prize fund in excess of $1 million.

The Manchester (N.H.) March GM invitational, the latest effort by New Hampshire organizer Alex Relyea (www.relyeachess.com), has just concluded with New Hampshire’s very own Josh Friedel placing first with 7 points in a bit of a surprise over the favorite, New Yorker, Alex Lenderman (6.5). Placing third was Massachusetts’ Eugene Perelshteyn (5.5). Rounding out the field was Indian grandmaster Sriram Jha (4.5), Canadian Razvan Preotu (4.0), and from Massachusetts via Ukraine Denys Shmelov (2.5). Running alongside this event was the New Hampshire Closed Championship which saw Belmont, Mass., native, Joe Fang, eking out half point victory over Hal Terrie of New Hampshire

The World Chess Tour after having lost the Norway Chess tournament early this year has announced two big money events to take its place: The GCT Blitz and Rapids. The first will be held in Paris from June 8 to 14 and the other the following week in Brussels. Each will feature a total prize fund of $150,000. It should be mentioned that the Sinquefeld cup was forced to change its dates to earlier this August to accommodate the change in date of the Chess Olympiad. The other event in the World Chess tour is the London Chess Classic, Dec. 12-16.
