NCAA to honor BC’s Frates

Former Boston College baseball captain Pete Frates will receive the NCAA’s 2017 Inspiration Award in January. Frates, who is from Beverly, inspired people around the world to dump buckets of ice water over their heads to raise millions for Lou Gehrig’s Disease research. Frates was 27 years old in 2012 when he was diagnosed with the disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Since his diagnosis, Frates has dedicated himself to efforts to find a cure for the neurodegenerative disease, which weakens muscles and impairs physical functioning. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million in 2014.

Harvard’s Murphy named top N.E. coach

Harvard’s Tim Murphy was named New England Division 1 football Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. Murphy has led the Crimson to a 7-2 overall mark and a 5-1 record in the Ivy League. The Gridiron Club also honored BC defensive end Harold Landry and UConn wide receiver Noel Thomas with the 78th annual George “Bulger’’ Lowe award, recognizing New England’s best offensive and defensive players in the NCAA bowl/championship division. BC special teams coordinator Al Washington was named assistant coach of the year in the bowl/championship division. The recipients will be honored at the club’s annual awards night, Dec. 15 in Burlington . . . Freshman guard DeJon Jarreau (16 points) scored the final 5 points for the UMass men’s basketball team as the Minutemen (2-1) took a 70-67 victory at home against Temple (1-2).

BC wins its NCAA tournament opener

BC’s Zeiko Lewis scored the lone goal in the 82nd minute, with an assist from Simon Enstrom, and the Eagles held off Fordham, 1-0, to advance to the second round of the NCAA men’s Division 1 tournament. BC will travel to face Albany on Sunday. Dartmouth also advanced when Matt Danilack scored the winner in double overtime to propel the host Big Green past St. Francis Brooklyn, 1-0. Darmouth will next face Syracuse. In other men’s first-round games, Providence topped Delaware, 2-0, and Vermont beat Rider, 3-2, in double overtime . . . Robbie Keane is leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy after winning three MLS Cup titles in parts of six seasons with the club. Keane, 36, intends to continue playing. He is looking for ‘‘one last major challenge in club football.’’ Keane was one of MLS’ best players with the Galaxy, winning the league MVP award in 2014 and propelling the club to championships in 2011, 2012, and 2014 . . . The English Premier League sold its television rights in China for $700 million in its biggest-ever overseas sale, said a person familiar with the deal. Online video streaming service PPTV sealed a three-year deal from the 2019-20 season . . . The long-awaited sale of AC Milan to Chinese investors could be completed next month. Sino-Europe Sports announced that the closing of the $800 million deal is slated for Dec. 13.

IOC strips 10 athletes of ’08 medals

The International Olympic Committee stripped 10 athletes of medals from the 2008 Olympics after banned substances were found during retests of samples from the Games. The IOC says the 10, nine of whom hail from former Soviet nations, all tested positive for various steroids. No gold medalists were among the 10, though there were three silver medalists from weightlifting and wrestling. Track and field was also hit, with Greek triple jumper Chrysopigi Devetzi and Ukrainian pole vaulter Denys Yurchenko losing their bronze medals. Yurchenko’s ban could elevate Derek Miles of the United States to the bronze medal position. Six athletes who did not win medals in 2008 were also disqualified. There could be another US medal for high jumper Chaunte Lowe, who originally finished sixth but is now in line to inherit bronze.

Hughes leads RSM Classic by one shot

Canadian rookie Mackenzie Hughes flirted with a sub-60 round until pars on the final three holes for a 9-under-par 61 and a one-shot lead over Stewart Cink and Jonathan Byrd at the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic in St. Simons Island, Ga . . . Shanshan Feng shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over So Yeon Ryu and Charley Hull after the first round of the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Fla. Feng is one of nine players who entered the season finale with a chance to win the Race to the CME Globe season title and $1 million bonus . . . Lee Westwood shot a 6-under 66 in swirling wind to take a one-stroke lead in the DP World Tour Championship, the European Tour’s season finale, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates . . . US amateur champion Curtis Luck and rookie professional Lucas Herbert each shot 5-under 67 to share the first-round Australian Open lead in Sydney Thursday, leading American star Jordan Spieth two strokes back. Australian golfer Peter Senior, a winner of more than 30 tournaments worldwide, announced his retirement at age 57 after being forced by a hip injury Friday to withdraw from the Australian Open in the second round.

Stamkos has surgery, out four months

Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos had surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee and will miss about four months, the team reported. Stamkos was injured Tuesday night . . . Detroit Red Wings forward Darren Helm will miss at least six weeks because of a dislocated shoulder . . . Novak Djokovic won his third straight match at the ATP finals, finishing group play undefeated for the fourth time in the past five years. The second-ranked Serb, who still has a chance to finish the season as the No. 1-ranked player, beat David Goffin, 6-1, 6-2.

. . . Former Chicago Sky coach Pokey Chatman will be the new coach of the Indiana Fever in the WNBA, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

. . . The ex-girlfriend who lost her lawsuit accusing NBA star Derrick Rose and two friends of rape has appealed. The appeal filed with the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals says pertinent evidence was excluded and jury instructions were tainted.
