The Los Angeles Lakers agreed to trade point guard D’Angelo Russell and high-priced center Timofey Mozgov to the Brooklyn Nets for big man Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick in the upcoming draft, three people with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press. The Lakers’ new front office, led by Magic Johnson, boldly decided to give up on Russell, the No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft, after just two years. He averaged 15.6 points and 4.8 assists last season while Los Angeles struggled to its fourth consecutive losing record. The deal all but confirmed Los Angeles will select UCLA point guard Lonzo Ball with the second overall pick in the draft Thursday, adding the gifted playmaker to run coach Luke Walton’s up-tempo offense . . . The Charlotte Hornets reached an agreement to acquire Dwight Howard and the No. 31 pick in Thursday’s draft from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for center Miles Plumlee, shooting guard Marco Belinelli, and the 41st pick . . . Pau Gasol will not exercise a $16 million player option on his contract for next year, but intends to sign a new deal with the San Antonio Spurs when free agency opens in July, according to the AP.

PGA to test for HGH next season
The PGA Tour, effective at the start of next season in October, will add blood testing for human growth hormones and bringing its list of banned substances in line with the World Anti-Doping Association. Under the revised policy, the tour is adding to three categories to its banned substances that WADA already prohibits — asthma medications, allergy and anti-inflammatory medications, and pseudoephedrine over a certain threshold.
Mickelson, longtime caddie to split
Phil Mickelson and his caddie, Jim “Bones’’ Mackay, agreed to part ways after 25 years of one of the most famous player-caddie relationships on the PGA Tour. Mackay is the only full-time caddie Mickelson has had in a career that has brought him 45 victories worldwide, five majors and a spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Mickelson says his brother, Tim Mickelson, will caddie for him.

NU, MLB roll out education program
Major League Baseball and Northeastern University are partnering to provide educational opportunities for big league players after management and the players’ association agreed to institute a continuing education program as part of the labor contract that started this season. Under the partnership, players will have access during and after their careers to courses that include undergraduate and graduate programs at the Boston-based university.
Angels place closer Norris on DL
Los Angeles Angels closer Bud Norris was placed on the 10-day disabled list because of right knee inflammation. Manager Mike Scioscia said Norris’s injury was the same one that forced the righthander from a game at Miami after three pitches May 26, but anticipated Norris will be activated the first day he is eligible on June 29 . . . Bartolo Colon’s return to the Atlanta Braves’ rotation was put on hold by a stiff back. The 44-year-old was scheduled to start Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants after a 10-day stint on the disabled list for a strained oblique . . . New York Yankees rookie sensation Aaron Judge, who leads the major leagues with 23 homers, has been invited to participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby in Miami July 10, but says he hasn’t thought about whether to accept.

Ronaldo, Mourinho facing tax fraud
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and former coach Jose Mourinho, now with Manchester United, are the latest members of the soccer elite to be accused of tax fraud in Spain. Ronaldo was told to appear in court on July 31, while Mourinho was accused by a state prosecutor of defrauding Spain’s Tax Office of $3.7 million . . . Tony DiCicco, a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame who coached the US to the 1999 World Cup title and a former coach of the Boston Breakers, died Monday at his Connecticut home.
