Less than a week after pitching Greater New Bedford to the Division 2 state championship, Tylor Arruda took the mound and fired two shutout innings at BC High’s Monan Park in the EMass North-South Senior All-Star Game.
“You play baseball all your life. growing bonds and friendships,’’ said Arruda. “Just to play an all-star game with all my friends to end the season. It’s great.’’
Despite North exploding for six runs in second inning en route to a 8-5 victory, the righthander was awarded most valuable pitcher of the game for his performance for the South in the fifth and sixth innings on the hill — the same hill he will call home for the next four years playing at UMass-Boston.
Arruda and eight other players from the game will join with nine players selected from the Central vs. West game to compete against the Connecticut senior all-stars at Monan Park at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
With the game tied, 1-1, after the first inning, the North began to square up the ball against Xaverian’s Dan Chapski, who started for the South.
St. John’s Prep’s Dan Frey highlighted the six-run second inning with a two-run single. Belmont’s Cal Christofori, who was named MVP of the game, had a double and a run scored in that inning as well.
Christofori also had a tying sacrifice fly in the first inning after East Bridgewater’s Mike Khoury singled home Mashpee’s Ari Purdy in the top half of the inning.
“There is a lot of good baseball here,’’ said St. John’s Prep coach Dan Letarte, who was the honorary coach for the North squad. “It is good to see that represented from every league. It’s a good reflection and sprinkling of everything in the North.’’
The South scored a run in the fourth inning when Martha’s Vineyard’s Jonas Lukowitz drove home Khoury after his triple. The South scored three more runs in the top of the seventh inning on two walks and a hit batter.
