Andy Husbands is getting ready to open the Smoke Shop, his new restaurant in Kendall Square. As you can tell by the name, the focus will be slow-cooked barbecue, and the menu will include Texas-style brisket, pulled pork, glazed BBQ chicken, fried chicken with “sexy gravy,’’ corn bread, Gram’s pickles, and — for you vegetarians out there — glazed tofu.

Husbands knows his way around a grill. He has been part of a competitive barbecue team for decades, and recently published a cookbook, “Grill to Perfection,’’ which he co-wrote with fellow pit master Chris Hart and food writer Andrea Pyenson.

Husbands says he’s “thrilled’’ to open his first barbecue restaurant in Boston.

“It has been a lifelong dream of mine to open a barbecue restaurant, and I’m very excited for guests to enjoy modern competition-style barbecue that’s enhanced with all-American hospitality,’’ Husbands said in a statement. “I believe everyone should be treated the way you treat your grandmother, and that’s the kind of experience you’ll be able to expect here.’’

The Smoke Shop is set to open the week of June 22 at One Kendall Square in Cambridge (in the space that was once home to Tommy Doyle’s), and in addition to top-notch BBQ, the 150-seat restaurant will feature an outdoor patio, a large selection of American whiskey, and live music Thursday through Sunday.
