It’s looking more and more as if Martellus Bennett’s tenure in New England is over.

On Wednesday, the Patriots acquired Colts tight end Dwayne Allen and a sixth-round draft pick for a fourth-round pick, multiple league sources confirmed to the Globe.

Allen became available when the Colts agreed with Jack Doyle on a three-year, $19 million pact on Tuesday.

An athletic, 6-foot-3-inch, 255-pounder, Allen had 35 catches for 406 yards and 6 touchdowns last season. For his five-year career (all with Indianapolis), he has 126 receptions for 1,451 yards and 19 TDs.

Allen has played in at least 13 games each of the last three seasons after missing most of 2013 (one game played) because of hip surgery.

Allen tweeted a message of thanks to the Colts organization, his former teammates, and fans late Wednesday afternoon. He also included “I’m both humbled and excited for the challenge ahead to earning the right to be called a New England Patriot.’’

With Bennett set to hit the open market Thursday at 4 p.m. and reportedly seeking upward of $9 million per season, Allen is a more affordable option for the Patriots. The former Clemson star has three years and $17.4 million left on a four-year, $29.4 million deal he signed last year.

Bennett came to New England via a trade with the Bears last offseason and it was a win-win for the team and the player.

Bennett is a physical run blocker and solid pass catcher. He caught 55 passes for 701 yards and 7 TDs as he helped the Patriots to a Super Bowl title. His durability proved invaluable (he played through ankle and shoulder woes), especially after Rob Gronkowski was lost in late November because of back surgery.

Allen should be warmly welcomed by Patriots fans. He tweeted in the aftermath of the 2015 AFC Championship game that Deflategate was “not a story.’’

He continued, “They could have played with soap for balls and beat us. Simply the better team.’’

It is the second straight day the Patriots have secured a tight end. The team tendered Matt Lengel, who began his college career at Northeastern, on Tuesday.

The Patriots also have Greg Scruggs and Rob Housler on the depth chart at tight end.

Michael Williams, who missed the 2016 season after tearing an ACL in June’s minicamp, also is listed on the team’s official roster, indicating he may have signed a new contract.
