It was 12 long years in the making, the fairy-tale finish for the Norwell boys’ swimming and diving team, which won its first MIAA South/Central sectional championship in school history at MIT’s Zesiger Center pool.
The Clippers finished with 187 points to top Westboro (180.50) and Wellesley (173.50).
“We’ve been here since the conception of the program and we’ve known since Day One that we had an extraordinary team on our hands this season, and today just proved it,’’ said Norwell coach Jennifer Schad. “The whole season we knew it would come down to the relays, and our best one [400 yard] definitely solidified for us that we can win at this level.’’
Taking the top spots in two of the three relays (the 200 medley in 1:39.11, the 400 freestyle in 3:15.51), Norwell earned top-six finishes in seven of the 12 events.
Junior Auston Ramsay, a BC High transfer, racked up wins in the 100 free (47.05) and 100 backstroke (52.01), while junior Henry Mooers placed first in the 500 freestyle (4:51.44), and senior Alex Rastelli came in second in the 100 butterfly (52.49).
“The atmosphere created here by our coaches [Schad, and assistant coach Julie Fox] has made me really appreciate swimming as a team much more than as an individual sport,’’ said Ramsay. “I think we won here today because of them and because they believe in us. I’ve never swum anywhere like here before.’’
Second-place Westboro was led by senior Jared Wong, who finished strong, winning the 100 butterfly (52.09) and tying for second in the 100 backstroke (54.41) with BC High sophomore Jared Daigle.
Senior Kyle Kennedy of Bridgewater-Raynham stole the show in 1-meter diving (510.95), with Mike Chirico of Dover-Sherborn coming in second (506.15).
Bishop Feehan junior Tim MacDonald won the 200 freestyle (1:45.54). Senior Roger Gu of Ashland won the 50 freestyle (21.40) and placed second in the 100 freestyle (47.30).
