Not going anywhere exotic for the Fourth of July? Don’t wallow in self-pity: Boston Harborfest celebrates its 35th anniversary starting on July 1. There are the traditional reenactments and Freedom Trail tours — but also new and expanded offerings at waterfront locations citywide. Screen the original, family-friendly “Yankee Doodle Dandy’’ on the lawn at Christopher Columbus Park; shop harbor-inspired (and other) paintings at The Arts at Harborfest; enjoy fireworks above Long Wharf; or indulge in a seafood smorgasbord at Taste of Harborfest, soundtracked by live entertainment. There are several unusual nowhere-but-here events, too: Explore the seamy side of the North End (smallpox! floods!) on a “Dark Side of Boston’’ tour or learn the delicate art of hat-making at Old North Church’s Colonial Festival. The festivities kick off on July 1 at noon at Faneuil Hall, with a performance by the 215th Army Band and a cake-cutting ceremony. Best of all, many activities are free.
