The Malden Catholic hockey team had dominated all but one second of the opening period of its Catholic Conference game with second-ranked BC High at UMass Boston’s Clark Athletic Center on Friday afternoon.
After a strong 14:59, fifth-ranked MC led, 1-0, but slipped up with 0.7 seconds left, allowing BC High sophomore Thomas Kramer to push a puck over the goal line just before the period ran out.
Rather than come out deflated in the second though, the Lancers bounced back to the tune of three goals in a seven-minute span in a commanding 5-1 victory.
“Mental mistake, it is what it is, and I told the kids to forget about it and get back to work,’’ Malden Catholic coach John McLean said of how his team rebounded.
The Lancers’ offense was flying for most of the first period, and with five minutes left junior Ryan Noonan broke the scoreless tie.
The Eagles (11-2-4, 2-2-4) pushed back, and eventually Kramer netted their lone goal on a power play. It was the only puck that got by junior goalie Brian Cannata, who made 21 stops.
Any momentum BC High carried into the second period evaporated quickly. The Lancers (12-3-3, 6-2-0) scored two power-play goals in the first 3:25 of the period to take control of the game. First, senior Thomas Albert scored just 1:36 into the period. Then, senior captain Justin Collins doubled the Lancers’ advantage, ripping a shot past Garrity while junior Joe Dragon sat for tripping. Senior defenseman Matt Yianacopolus got a piece of the scoring with 8:26 left, sneaking a point shot past Garrity to put MC up, 4-1.
“We were just clicking,’’ Collins said. “Making quick passes and getting pucks to the net, and when we do that it usually works in our favor.’’
Sophomore defenseman Jagger Benson added the final MC goal of the period, their third power-play tally.
The Lancers shut the door in the third as Cannata blanked BC High.
The Lancers moved atop the Catholic Conference, sitting 1 point ahead of Catholic Memorial without any remaining league games. MC can clinch the league title if CM loses to Xaverian on Tuesday.
“Any win in the league is huge,’’ McLean said. “We’ll take it and move on.’’
