For brunch, a taste of the Middle East
By Kara Baskin

Avi Shemtov’s The Chubby Chickpea is known for its luscious fast-casual, Israeli-style Middle Eastern dishes, an affordable stop for chicken schnitzel plates, Israeli pickles, and chickpea fries. (Shemtov is also known for “The Single Guy Cookbook,’’ which features meals for solo diners that are cheaper than takeout and painless to prepare.) Chef Dave Becker’s Juniper bistro in Wellesley is known for its tasty lunch and dinnertime Mediterranean menu. But brunch? Yes, it’s true: Shemtov will visit Juniper on Saturday, Jan. 8, alongside host-chef Becker (below) for a one-time-only brunch. He’ll whip up shakshuka — a Middle Eastern version of eggs in tomato sauce — plus lamb belly hash, confit duck Benedict, fried bacon gravy, and other comforting treats you probably vowed you wouldn’t eat in the new year. Becker will provide funky brunch cocktails. Brunch starts at the reasonable hour of 11:30 a.m. and lasts until 2:30 p.m. Make reservations at 781-446-6950; walk-ins are welcome, too.
