Assistant principal named to a top job

Beverly High School assistant principal Daniel Bauer will be the next principal of Marblehead High School starting July 1, the day after outgoing principal Layne Millington departs.

In announcing the appointment, Superintendent Maryann Perry called Bauer “an outstanding and seasoned leader.’’

Bauer, 48, beat out over 40 applicants for the job. Brookline High School principal Deborah Holman was the other finalist.

His challenge during the transition period, Bauer said, is to get to know the school, the community, and learn “what Marblehead High does well and what we can work on. The first six months is critical to developing relationships and collaborations. My first step will be to meet with different groups and be as visible as possible.’’

When Millington, who was hired in 2013, announced in December that he would not seek to renew his three-year contract when it expires in June, Perry formed a 24-member search committee to find his successor.

Bauer will not only be leaving an academic position at Beverly High, he will be ending a 14-year run as the head football coach. Even before he came on as assistant principal at Beverly High in 2006, Bauer became coach of the Beverly Panthers in 2003. His football coaching career began at his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, in 1990. He also has master’s degrees in education from Tufts University and Endicott College.

Asked if he’ll miss coaching, Bauer said: “No. That’s part of moving on.’’

But he sees parallels between coaching and his new position at Marblehead High School.

“Coaching and teaching are the same. They take collaboration. In coaching, you have to have a vision of how to create a team. I think those skills are transferable,’’ he said.

Bauer also has a hand in theater. He is playing Tweedle Dee in Beverly High’s production of “Shrek the Musical.’’ Audiences won’t hear him say any lines, but they will see Bauer dance in the chorus.

“It gives me a chance to work alongside the kids,’’ said Bauer, who downplayed his dancing chops.
