The Everett boys’ hockey team captured its first Greater Boston League title since 1970 with a 7-0 victory over visiting Somerville Wednesday night at Allied Veterans Memorial Rink. This year’s title, which is shared with Medford, is just the second in the 55-year history of Everett hockey.

“The kids were through the roof,’’ Everett coach Jason Lawrence said. “They deserve it, they’ve been playing hard. This was one of our goals at the beginning of the year.’’

Junior forward Marc Faia scored four goals to propel the Crimson Tide (3-1 GBL, 6-7 overall).

“Marc had a great night, but we had a lot of guys chipping in,’’ Lawrence said.

Seniors J.J. MacLaughlin, Gino DeSimone, and Ray Suppa each scored once and recorded two assists.

Although it didn’t show up on the scoresheet, Lawrence praised the play of junior defenseman Jack MacLaughlin and junior forward Bryan Bessler.

“They stepped up tonight,’’ Lawrence said. “They’re always playing the game the right way.’’

Sophomore goalie Brendan Calderon made 20 saves to earn his first career shutout.

“He played great, he made the saves he needed to make,’’ Lawrence said. “Our defense really helped him out.’’

Westford 95, St. John’s Prep 91 — Westford Academy and St. John’s Prep have built a competitive rivalry over the past decade. Last year, Westford won the Division 1 state final, snapping the Prep’s nine-year stranglehold.

Wednesday marked the first time the teams got together for a regular-season meet and it ended in dramatic fashion at UMass-Lowell. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the last event of the meet, Westfield came from behind to beat St. John’s by two seconds to win, 95-91.

“We knew it would be a close race, Tony [Padvaiskas] does a great job with the Prep kids,’’ Westford coach Harriet Kinnett said. “We knew it was going to come down to the last relay . . . so it was exciting.’’

Westford needed first- and third-place finishes in order to tie the meet, but first and second would win it. The Prep’s Joseph Turk and Trevor Gowdy got the Prep out to a strong lead, but Westford’s third and fourth swimmers, Florian Haedicke and Jason Jung, were able to make up the ground and nudge Prep by two seconds.
