Matt Durgin picked up his 150th win as a head coach as St. Mary’s remained undefeated with a decisive victory over Cardinal Spellman, 36-7, on Saturday in a Catholic Central Large matchup in Lynn.
Senior Abraham Toe had three touchdowns, including an 89-yard return on the opening kickoff, while senior Calvin Johnson added two TDs and two interceptions in the win.
“I’ve been fortunate to coach a lot of talented kids,’’ said Durgin. “And a lot of good kids. It’s not just players — it’s all the players that I’ve had the opportunity to coach.’’
Durgin, in his ninth year at St. Mary’s and 20th overall (mostly with the same coaching staff), picked up his 73rd career victory with the Spartans (6-0, 4-0 CCL). His record included 72 wins in 10 seasons at Lynn Classical, and five at Malden Catholic for one season.
“Some of us have been together for 18, almost 19 years,’’ Durgin said of his staff. “I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to work with.’’
Defensively, the Spartans got key sacks early in the game from Matt Cross and Cam Sakowich.
