Djokovic upset at Shanghai

For Novak Djokovic, there were no songs on stadium court at the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament in China Saturday. Just a smashed racket, torn shirt, and a lot of frustration. The top-ranked Serb struggled to control his errors (29 unforced) — and his emotions — and was upset in the semifinals by Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-4, 6-4. Andy Murray had his own anger issues in the other semifinal against Gilles Simon, but the second seed regained his composure and pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 victory . . . Caroline Wozniacki reached her second final in the past month, defeating Jelena Jankovic, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the title match at the Hong Kong Open. She’ll play Kristina Mladenovic, who defeated eighth-seeded Daria Gavrilova, 7-5, 6-3 . . . Dominika Cibulkova reached her sixth final of the season by defeating Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-4, 6-3, at the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria. She will play Viktorija Golubic in Sunday’s final. Golubic advanced when third-seeded Madison Keys (cold) pulled out of the event hours before their semifinal.

Wagner leads Safeway

Johnson Wagner chipped in for birdie, and wound up taking a one-shot lead in the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif. He was at 15-under par through 15 holes when the third round was halted by the wet conditions. Scott Piercy, who had led from his opening 62 that set the course record, was one shot behind and just short of the par-5 16th in three shots when he told officials he couldn’t continue . . . Sweden’s Alex Noren moved in sight of a third European Tour title this year after shooting a second straight 6-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead at the British Masters heading into the final round in Watford, England . . . Anirban Lahiri, the 2014 champion, and S Chikkarangappa both shot 69 to share the lead at 10-under 203 at the Macau Open. Ian Poulter, coming off 14 weeks on the sidelines because of an arthritic joint in his right foot, finish the third round with an even-par 71 and a share of 14th place . . .Bernhard Langer birdied the final four holes for his second straight 5-under 67 and a two-stroke lead in the Champions Tour’s SAS Championship in Cary, N.C.. . . Alison Lee took a three-stroke lead in the LPGA KEB HanaBank Championship in Incheon, South Korea. She shot a 4-under 68 to stretch her margin over US Women's Open champion Brittany Lang.

Solo to go overseas?

US goalkeeper Hope Solo said she has received offers to play overseas and could even continue her career in Sweden, where fans were enraged when she described their national team as ‘‘cowards.’’ Solo made the remarks in a talk show aired late Friday on Swedish television network SVT . . . Lionel Messi displayed no signs of rust after more than three weeks out of action with a right groin strain and scored inside of four minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute to help host Barcelona rout Deportivo La Coruna, 4-0. Messi fired in a well-placed pass by Neymar in the Spanish league match.

Solo said she was still reeling from being kicked out by the US Soccer Federation, and suggested it was partly due to her advocacy for women’s rights. Solo apologized for remarks about Swedish team. The USSF suspended Solo for six months and terminated her contract, saying it was the result of missteps

. . . FIFA has left the allocation of berths for the Women’s World Cup unchanged, meaning Europe will get one extra berth (eight total in addition to the host nation) when the 24-nation tournament shifts to France in 2019 from Canada last year.

Newton gets cleared

Cam Newton was cleared from the NFL’s concussion program and can play Sunday when Carolina visits New Orleans. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the quarterback was expected to start against the Saints ‘‘barring a setback.’’ . . . Jacksonville Jaguars free safety Tashaun Gipson is now questionable to play at Chicago because of a knee injury . . . Dennis Byrd, the former NFL defensive lineman whose career was ended by neck injury that left him paralyzed for a few weeks, was killed in a car accident near Claremore, Okla. He was 51. Byrd broke his neck in a game in November 1992. After a vigorous rehabilitation, he returned to the Meadowlands for the Jets’ opening game the following season and walked to midfield as an honorary captain. Byrd was played by actor-director Peter Berg in a made-for-TV movie about his life . . . Kyle Busch led 150 of the 200 laps in a thoroughly dominant performance for his third straight Xfinity win at Kansas Motor Speedway.

. . . MVP Nneka Ogwumike topped the All-WNBA first team. The Los Angeles Sparks forward was the only unanimous pick, receiving 39 first-place votes and 195 points from the media panel. Joining her were New York center Tina Charles, Minnesota guard Maya Moore, Seattle guard Sue Bird, and Chicago forward Elena Delle Donne. On second team were forwards Angel McCoughtry of Atlanta and Breanna Stewart of Seattle, guards Diana Taurasi of Phoenix and Jewell Loyd of Seattle, and center Sylvia Fowles of Minnesota.

. . . Washington Wizards center Ian Mahinmi is expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing left knee surgery to repair a partial torn medial meniscus . . . Garrett Richards is expected to be ready for spring training after the Los Angeles Angels right-hander completed his instructional league work with no problems in his right elbow. Richards is hoping to avoid Tommy John surgery with rest, stem-cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma injections . . . The World Anti-Doping Agency signed an agreement with Japanese drug maker Astellas Pharma Inc. to help fight doping in sports.Astellas will identify compounds it produces, including those in development, that could be abused by athletes and share the information with the agency to help find methods of detecting the substances.
