Recent bird sightings as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society:
Signs of early spring migration were evident last week with reports of wood ducks, hooded mergansers, killdeer, Wilson’s snipes, American woodcocks, red-winged blackbirds, and common grackles.
?Provincetown: A yellow-billed loon was spotted at Race Point Beach on Feb. 27, marking the first-ever report of this species in the state. The loon was still present as recently as last Friday. In addition, at least two Pacific loons were seen in the same area.
?Plum Island: At Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, there were two brant, 10 gadwall, 11 northern pintails, a bald eagle, and a hermit thrush.
?Ipswich: There were reports of two snow geese, 13 killdeer, and two eastern meadowlarks.
?Newton: Two American woodcocks were noted at Nahanton Park.
?Concord: At Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, there were two wood ducks, four ring-necked ducks, 30 hooded mergansers, and an eastern bluebird.
?Middleborough: Sightings at the Cumberland Farms fields included three rough-legged hawks, 10 killdeer, a Wilson’s snipe, a common raven, 40 horned larks, and 1,000 red-winged blackbirds.
?Bourne: Two killdeer and three Wilson’s snipes were seen in Buzzards Bay.
?Worcester: At Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, there were three American woodcocks and the continued presence of a red-headed woodpecker.
