Lowell handed visiting Salem just its second loss of the season in boys’ basketball, 75-69, on Wednesday.
Both of Salem’s losses this season have been to the Red Raiders (17-2), who beat the Witches (16-2) last week. Lowell coach Bob Michalczyk explained the reason for his team’s success in these games.
“I think they play a very similar style of play to us, so it’s a good matchup for us,’’ said Michalczyk after the win. “We like to get up and down the court and we’re slightly smaller than the average team is.
“They’re a really good team and it could have gone either way, we just made a couple more plays than they did.’’
Freshman point guard Quest Harris lit up the scoreboard with 26 points, but Michalczyk stressed that the victory was a team effort.
“Sidi Diallo only had 6 points, but he had eight rebounds and he guarded their best shooter,’’ said Michalczyk about his junior guard. “He held the other kid to 9 points, when in reality he’s a much better player than that.’’
Senior forward and captain Sean Bryan scored 11 points, handed out 8 assists, and pulled down 7 rebounds. Tim Sousa, a junior shooting guard, added 12 points, connecting on four 3-pointers in the first half.
“This was [a big game] record-wise . . . There was a weird feeling in the gym today, it was strange,’’ said Michalczyk.
The coach blamed the peculiar atmosphere on the small Wednesday afternoon crowd, and lauded his team for recognizing the game’s importance, regardless.
After finishing out the regular season, the Red Raiders will look ahead — from atop the Merrimack Valley Conference — to next month’s MIAA tournament. Michalczyk likes his squad’s chances.
“I feel pretty good,’’ he said. “We’ve got a group of guys who are unselfish and love to play in big games.’’
