Imagine if Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning movie “The Departed’’ was made into a TV series. . . but set in present-day Chicago? Apparently that’s the concept behind a new series that’s in the works at Amazon.

Deadline.com reports that the new crime drama, written by Jason Richman, “is set . . . amidst the shifting tides of warring ethnic drug gangs.’’ The show centers on a young undercover cop who infiltrates a Latino gang, while the gang puts one of its own on the police department.

This news just makes us more nostalgic for the 2006 film, which was set in Bostonandstarred Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, and Jack Nicholson. The movie was a huge success, and won tons of awards(Dorchester-born screenwriter William Monahan won an Oscar for the screenplay).

Will the Amazon series be nearly as good as the movie? Is that even possible?
