To the delight of local beer aficionados, the defunct Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project is making an unexpected comeback. But to our dismay, it’s happening in an unexpectedly distant place: Scotland.
Dann Paquette and Martha Holley-Paquette shut down their Massachusetts-based gypsy (or itinerant) brewery in December, ending a seven-year run of making quirky and award-winning beers such as Jack D’Or. The decision, which came with little warning or explanation, was a massive let-down for the company’s cult following of connoisseurs.
But after traveling the world for six months, the couple this week rolled out a new Pretty Things website and announced they have just finished a new beer in collaboration with the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The brew, dubbed “Seasoned Traveler,’’ is a hoppy pale ale inspired by Pretty Things’ earlier “Fringe Pale Ale.’’ Unfortunately for local drinkers, it will be available on tap only at the Wetherspoons pub chain located in the United Kingdom. (On the plus side, with the pound falling against the dollar because of the “Brexit’’ vote, it’s cheaper to travel to the UK these days.)
In December, the couple were cryptic about their reasons for closing. Now, the brewers have offered a new window into their thinking, saying they walked away because “Pretty Things wanted to evolve.’’
“So much had changed since we first embarked on this escapade — including us,’’ the pair wrote. “We detected and answered a subtle call from the future, telling us to go and explore new things.’’
Paquette achieved notoriety in beer circles in 2014, when he unleashed a series of angry late-night tweets condemning so-called “pay-to-play,’’ in which distributors pay bars to carry certain brews and keep others out. Improbably, his rant helped spur a state investigation into the practice that resulted in the largest-ever fine levied by the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
As for the future of Pretty Things, the couple offered this characteristically poetic-but-vague plan:
“We are travelling the world in pursuit of who-knows-what, but we will promise you this: We will always be dedicated to better beer, and better beer only,’’ they said. “We believe in the mighty grain, the bitter hop, and the fascinating yeast.’’
Amen to that.
