EAST BRIDGEWATER — Four quarters weren’t enough to separate East Bridgewater and Norwell in the Division 3A South final on Friday night.

After the two South Shore League rivals played to a 14-14 draw through four quarters, the Vikings prevailed in the overtime, taking a 22-20 win and the division title.

Norwell won the overtime toss and deferred, giving the Vikings the first shot at breaking the deadlock.

Starting from the 10-yard line, East Bridgewater put the ball in senior running back Pat Snow’s belly three straight times, the final run finding the end zone from 2 yards out. The Vikings’ mandatory 2-point conversion attempt was good, sophomore quarterback Liam LeVangie finding senior Gregg Plunkett in the corner of the end zone.

The Clippers responded quickly as sophomore quarterback Cal Smith broke outside the pocket and dove for the pylon, bringing Norwell within 22-20. Smith’s pass over the middle that was batted down by senior linebacker Nick Khoury, though, sealing it for East Bridgewater.

“In championship games, the other team is going to do something good,’’ coach Shawn Tarpey said. “It’s not like you’re playing a 2-9 team, they expect to win. We talked about the mental toughness that’s needed to come back if you’re down tonight.’’

The Vikings (9-1) needed every bit of that toughness as they trailed, 14-0, at the half.

With the wind playing a huge role, East Bridgewater relied on its defense and Snow (117 yards, three touchdowns) in the second half to claw their way back and force overtime.

“It’s difficult for 17-year-old kids to bounce back when they haven’t been down a lot this year,’’ Tarpey said. “I told them whatever happens, just go down fighting.’’

The Vikings threw the final punch when Khoury knocked Smith’s pass into the turf to send East Bridgewater to Brockton next Saturday to play the winner of Nipmuc and Uxbridge.
