BU romps over UNH

The fourth-ranked Boston University men’s hockey team came roaring back from a 3-1 deficit to score three goals in the second period and four in the third in taking an 8-4 victory over the University of New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center on Saturday.

Freshman Patrick Harper scored twice and added an assist for the Terriers (20-9-3, 12-5-3 Hockey East) as BU outshot UNH, 37-24. The Wildcats fell to 12-15-5, 7-9-4.

Harvard 6, Brown 0 — The No. 3 Crimson (20-5-2, 14-4-2 ECAC) extended their win streak to eight games with a victory over the host Bears (4-21-2, 3-16-1). Tyler Moy scored a pair of goals and assisted on another and Ryan Donato picked up four assists. Merrick Madsen had 11 saves in the first two periods and Cameron Gornet 12 in the third as the duo shared the shutout.

UMass Lowell 5, UMass 2 — John Edwardh had two goals and an assist and C.J. Smith had a goal and three assists as the sixth-ranked River Hawks (19-9-3, 11-7-1 Hockey East) defeated the host Minutemen (5-24-2, 2-16-1).

Northeastern 4, UConn 1 — Zach Aston-Reese collected a hat trick to bump his nation-leading goal total to 27, pacing the NU Huskies (14-12-5, 7-9-3 Hockey East) over the UConn Huskies (10-13-8, 6-9-4) at Matthews Arena.

Notre Dame 3, Providence 3 — Cam Morrison’s goal at 8:40 of the third pulled the No. 15 host Irish (18-9-4, 11-5-3 Hockey East) even with the No. 10 Friars (18-9-4, 10-7-2).

Women’s hockey

Providence 4, BC 1 — The Friars (16-14-3, 11-9-3 Hockey East) blitzed the sixth-ranked Eagles (22-5-5, 16-4-3) in Providence, with Christina Putigna scoring just 54 seconds into the game. Kathleen McHugh had two goals and an assist for the hosts.

Delaney Belinskas had BC’s goal. It came at 5:25 of the second period and cut into the Friars’ 2-0 lead.

Brown 3, Harvard 1 — Sena Hanson pocketed a pair of goals plus an assist for the Bears (7-22-0, 5-17-0 ECAC) at Bright-Landry Center. Brown’s Monica Elvin made 42 saves.

The Crimson (5-19-5, 5-13-4) got a power-play goal from Lexie Laing at 13:39 of the third period to pull within 2-1, but Hanson completed her big day with an empty-net score at 19:24.

Men’s basketball

Harvard 87, Cornell 75 — The Crimson (16-7, 8-2 Ivy) built a 20-point halftime lead and cruised at home, led by Seth Towns with 21 points.

Rhode Island 77, George Mason 74 — Stanford Robinson hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final 45 seconds and finished with a career-high 21 points for the Rams (17-9, 9-5 Atlantic 10) in Fairfax, Va.

Davidson 79, UMass 74 — The host Minutemen continued their late-season slump with their seventh loss in eight games. Donte Clark and DeJon Jarreau led UMass (13-14, 3-11 Atlantic 10) with 16 points apiece.

Jack Gibbs hit six 3-pointers and scored 30 points for Davidson (14-11, 7-7 Atlantic 10).

Gibbs hit all six of his 3-pointers in the first half and accounted for 24 of the Wildcats’ 38 points in the first 20 minutes.

Andrew McAuliffe and Peyton Aldridge each added 14 points for the Wildcats, with Aldridge grabbing 13 rebounds.

The Minutemen outshot Davidson, 48.1 percent to 41.5 percent, but attempted 11 fewer field goals, due in part to their 18 turnovers.

Davidson kept UMass at bay for most of the final 10 minutes. The Minutemen managed to fight back to within 75-72 with 21 seconds left, but two Rusty Reigel free throws pushed the Wildcats’ lead back to 5.

College of Charleston 85, Northeastern 71 — The Cougars (21-8, 12-4 Colonial Athletic) put away the Huskies (14-14, 7-9) with a 20-8 second-half run at Matthews Arena. TJ Williams scored 18 points to lead NU.

Charleston’s Joe Chealey made 6 of 8 3-point shots and scored 29 points. The Cougars finished 12 of 24 from deep.

UMBC 108, UMass Lowell 102 — Ryan­ Jones scored a career-high 32 points for the River Hawks (11-19, 5-10 America East), but they still lost their third straight. Will Darley hit a program-record 10 3-pointers for the host Retrievers (17-10, 8-6) and poured in a career-high 38 points.

Bryant 79, St. Francis (Pa.) 75 — Adam­ Grant hit two late free throws and finished with 18 points, and the Bulldogs (11-18, 8-8 Northeast) rallied in Smithfield, R.I., for their third straight win.

Kansas 67, Baylor 65 — Landen Lucas made two free throws with 11 seconds left, and the third-ranked Jayhawks (24-3, 12-2) built up a three-game lead atop the Big 12 by beating the No. 4 Bears (22-5, 9-5) in Waco, Texas.

Women’s basketball

UConn 63, Tulane 60 — Napheesa Collier (26 points, 12 rebounds) and the No. 1 Huskies (26-0, 13-0 American Athletic) held on in New Orleans for UConn’s 101st consecutive win. The Green Wave (16-11, 7-7) missed a desperation 3-pointer that would’ve forced overtime.

Cornell 57, Harvard 52 — The Crimson (18-4, 6-3 Ivy) couldn’t protect a 5-point halftime lead in Ithaca, N.Y.

Katie Benzan topped Harvard with 16 points and Madeline Raster had 13 points and nine boards.

Bucknell 73, BU 56 — Corrine Williams (13 points) was the top scorer for the Terriers (11-15, 9-6 Patriot) in Lewisburg, Pa. BU shot just 35.7 percent from the field, 58.3 percent from the foul line, and 15.4 percent from 3-point range.

Holy Cross 51, American 46 — The Crusaders outscored the Eagles, 21-4, in the fourth quarter at Hart Center. Madalyn Smith had four 3-pointers and a team-high 16 points for host Holy Cross (7-19, 5-10 Patriot).

UMBC 78, UMass Lowell 62 — Nicole Hayner’s game-high 27 points couldn’t prevent the host River Hawks (3-25) from falling to 0-15 in America East play.
