Theo Burba has had his eye on breaking 1 minute, 20 seconds all winter in the 600 meters.

On Saturday morning, the Newton North sophomore did so — setting a meet record with his time of 1:19.62 at the Reggie Lewis Center — as the Tigers captured the Division 1 boys’ indoor track and field title.

Newton North totaled 71 points to top Acton-Boxborough (47) and St. John’s Shrewsbury (40), winning its first crown since 2013.

The Tigers also received a stellar performane from junior Andrew Mah, who, after finishing fifth in the mile, came back and won the 2 mile, crossing in 9:20.05.

“Theo and Andrew were outstanding competitors today,’’ said Newton North coach Jim Blackburn. “They certainly came up big for us.’’

Burba was happy that he was able to realize his season goal of running under 1:20.

“On that last stretch I was hoping that nobody would come up from behind me because I’ve been in that same situation before, trying to get someone at the last second,’’ he said. “But I’m glad I was able to hold on.’’

Burba also anchored the victorious 4 x 400 relay team, teaming up with junior Devin Coughlin, sophomore Forest Kaplan, and senior Dobbin Bookman for a 3:26.88 finish. The Tigers also received a first-place finish from senior Nathaniel Klein in the shot put (52 feet, 2.25 inches).

Completing the Garden City sweep, the Newton South girls (78 points) registered five-place finishes to nose out Franklin (65) and Wachusett (58) for the title.

“I knew on paper that we could score over 70 and I felt like if we did that we had a really good chance to win,’’ said Newton South coach Steve McChesney.

The 1,000 and mile were the Lions’ bread and butter, as the team racked up 37 points from the two events.

Junior Caroline Barry (5:13.82) and senior Katie Collins (5:16.50) were first and second in the mile, while freshman Lucy Jenks was first (2:57.73) and senior Clare Martin second (2:58.35) in the 1,000.

“These kids help each other every workout and everybody has the ability to lead the workout,’’ McChesney said. “It’s great for team confidence and it makes my job really easy.’’

In addition, Calene Lazare won the 55-meter dash (7.24 seconds), Collins went the distance in the 2-mile (11:09.27), and junior Emily Bulczynski, followed by Jenks, Barry, and Martin won the 4 x 800 (9:28.86).
