‘Mona Lisa of the sea’

Photographer Don Krohn’s new book, “On Cape Cod,’’ features photos from across the Cape. Each week we’ll feature one photo from each of the Cape’s 15 towns and Krohn’s descriptions of his work.

Ihave taken more photographs of Provincetown and its dune landscapes than of any other town on Cape Cod, and they include many of my favorite images. So I can’t easily defend my choice of this one, a portrait of a gray seal off Race Point Beach, as my selection to represent the famous town. I have come to associate these seals, now quite abundant, with the less easily categorized aspects of Cape Cod, and with a welcome and mysterious wildness. That seems to be a nice fit for Provincetown. The thoughtful expression of this animal intrigues me, and like a Mona Lisa of the sea, the meaning of its gaze varies depending on viewer’s state of mind.
