Here’s something to look forward to: “SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical’’ will open on Broadway in April, and rehearsals for the show started Tuesday.

We can’t think of a more deserving subject for a Broadway show than Donna Summer (inset), the disco queen who was raised on Mission Hill and attended Jeremiah E. Burke High School, the Farragut School, and Brighton High before becoming a five-time Grammy winner.

It’ll take three actresses to play Summer: Tony Award winner LaChanze (“The Color Purple’’) as “Diva Donna,’’ Ariana DeBose (“A Bronx Tale,’’ “Hamilton’’) as “Disco Donna,’’ and Storm Lever (“Freaky Friday’’) as “Duckling Donna.’’

The cast of “SUMMER’’ also includes Aaron Krohn (“Cabaret’’), Ken Robinson (“The Color Purple’’), and Jared Zirilli (“Lysistrata Jones’’). The musical was written by Colman Domingo, Robert Cary, and Des McAnuff, and features songs by Summer, Giorgio Moroder, and Paul Jabara, and it’s being directed byMcAnuff and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo.

Summer, who died of cancer in 2012, sold more than 140 million records. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
