Inspiration comes in different forms and at different ages.
Katherine Santos, 8, of Westwood, and Pranav Addanki, 10, of Canton, are two winners of Disney Be Inspired $500 grants through a program with Youth Service America. More than 200 youngsters nationwide won the grants.
Katherine won for a project she and her fellow Girl Scout Brownies in Westwood will do to repaint and restore an American flag mural at the playground of their Martha Jones School , and for her ongoing Kindness Rock Project, in which participants paint happy words or images on flat rocks to be distributed around town and beyond.
Thus far, about 460 rocks have been created in town. And thanks to spreading the word via social media, rocks have been painted by people around the world, as far away as Madagascar.
Pranav earned his grant for Project SNOW (Safeguarding Neighborhoods Over Winter), an initiative the JFK Elementary School student created with other young people to educate the public about the dangers of winter and to help senior citizens and youngsters throughout the winter by providing services and activities.
“And we will conduct a donation drive for pet supplies for the animal shelter to ensure that stray animals have everything they need to be safe over winter,’’ said Pranav, who with others in his project planned to explain it to legislators at the State House.
Katherine started a website, www.girlscoutkindnessrocks.weebly.com, and asked area businesses to help her out, negotiating wisely, said her mother, Keri. The girl asked the manager of The Home Depot in Norwood for river rocks that could be easily painted, and was offered one bag.
“She asked for five,’’ Keri Santos said with a laugh. “And she got them. She’s amazing — I’ve seen sides of her, doing this project, I’d not seen before.’’
Asked where the painted rocks are going, Katherine said: “Places where people might feel sad, like a hospital or senior center, places like that.’’
Helping others is also what drives him, said Pranav, whose Facebook page is www.facebook.com/projectsnow1718/.
“Helping seniors and young children in the community and making our town safer and more enjoyable for people of all ages into the future generations gives me immense satisfaction,’’ he said.
