Oliver has choice words for Emily Rooney

Emily Rooney got a shout-out Sunday night from John Oliver — and we do mean a shout-out.

Introducing a segment about Net neutrality on his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,’’ Oliver reminded viewers that he’d first talked about Net neutrality on the show three years ago — and the piece, he said, “got a weird amount of attention.’’ (In fact, the day after that first segment aired, thousands of people submitted comments to the FCC, crashing the government website. The piece has since been viewed more than 12 million times on YouTube.)

On Sunday’s show, Oliver cut to a clip of Rooney commenting on all the attention the earlier piece received.

“’Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ has languished in relative obscurity since it debuted in April,’’ Rooney said on “Beat the Press’’ three years ago. “But this week, an Oliver diatribe about Net neutrality went viral.’’

The camera then cut back to Oliver, who hollered: “Hey, [expletive] you, lady! I didn’t languish in relative obscurity. I thrived in relative obscurity. Relative obscurity is my middle name.’’

Oliver went on to explain the importance of an open Internet and to encourage viewers to once again contact the FCC and comment on the proposed regulations.

Wondering what Rooney thought of Sunday’s segment? She thought it was hoot.

“That’s what he does,’’ she told us Monday. “I have no problem with it.’’

She pointed out that the 2014 segment on “Beat of Press’’ was actually exceedingly complimentary of Oliver’s Net neutrality rant, but Rooney did take the host to task for swearing too much to make his point.
