The New Kids on the Block are gearing up to embark on a North American tour with Paula Abdul and Boyz II Men next year.
On Wednesday morning, Danny Wood, Jordan Knight, and Joey McIntyre (above, from left) met with reporters in the lobby of Fox 25 studios in Dedham to talk about “The Total Package Tour,’’ which kicks off May 12 in Columbus, Ohio, and will continue through more than 40 cities across the country. They’ll be traveling to Los Angeles, Brooklyn, N.Y., Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans, Nashville, and Toronto.
“We’re excited,’’ said McIntyre. “It’s gonna be a pahhhhty!’’
Of course, the guys are in their 40s now, so going on tour isn’t exactly what it used to be. They’re no longer awestruck by their celebrity — they’re seasoned veterans with children of their own. The kids of the New Kids will be able to catch their dads’ tour when school is out for the summer. Knight said he’ll make sure he has video games ready for his teenage son to take on the tour bus.
But one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the devotion of NKOTB fans. Knight is amazed by the energy of the crowds. “They’re still very crazy,’’ he said.
On a recent NKOTB cruise, Wood said one creative fan crafted puppets in their likeness. “They were really elaborate . . . and very creepy,’’ he said.
A highlight of the tour will be their July 8 show at Fenway Park. It will be their second time performing at the ballpark, and hopefully it won’t rain this time (it poured in 2011 during their show with the Backstreet Boys).
Knight said playing Fenway was a “pretty surreal moment.’’ Wood said it was a moment he never dreamed of. They’re looking forward to doing it again.
Tickets for the Fenway Park show will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. on www.redsox.com/newkidsontheblock.
