Two Boston-based initiatives — the Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción youth development program and True Colors: Out Youth Theater, a program of The Theater Offensive — were honored with the 2016 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award on Tuesday. IBA’s Youth Development Program prepares low-income young people for college and careers, and True Colors bills itself as the largest and longest-running lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth theater program in the country. Representatives from each organization — including Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción CEO Vanessa Calderón-Rosado;IBA youth participant Noemi Negron;Abe Rybeck, the executive artistic director and founder of The Theater Offensive; Evelyn Francis, The Theater Offensive’s director of programs; and True Colors participants Niccole Williams and Traeshayona “Trae’’ Weekes — traveled to Washington to accept the award from first lady Michelle Obama at the White House.
