Buckeye’s girls basketball team will enjoy some home cooking in the postseason. Thanks to a nice draw and spot on the bracket, the Bucks have a chance to enjoy a bit more than that even.
Buckeye got the No. 6 seed in the Elyria Division II District. That gives the Bucks a home tournament game for the second consecutive year, then a chance to play a familiar foe in the second round.
The Bucks (11-8 overall and 10-3 in Patriot Athletic Conference play heading into the week) will open against No. 11 seed Brookside, which will come to Buckeye for a 1 p.m. game on Feb. 12. The winner will play at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 at No. 3 Clearview, which the Bucks beat last week, albeit at home.
The winner will advance to a 7:45 p.m. Feb. 26 district semifinal at Elyria High School, maybe against No. 2 seed Bay. The district final is March 31 at 7 p.m., also at Elyria.
The Bucks started last week with a 39-34 loss at Keystone. Grace Allen led Buckeye with 12 points and six rebounds. The Bucks led by six after a quarter and still by five at halftime.
They followed that with a come-from-behind 56-53 win over Clearview on Feb. 3. Trailing 31-21 at half, the Bucks outscored the Clippers 15-5 in the third quarter to get back in things. That was part of a 23-7 run overall.
Madison Ross led Buckeye with 17 points. Allen added 13 to go with 20 rebounds. Tatum Widenmeyer chipped in 10 points and Gabby Glancy scored 9.
The Bucks were set to travel to Black River for a Feb. 7 contest. They finish the regular season with games at Columbia (Feb. 10) and home against Wellington (Feb. 14) before hitting the postseason trail.

A pair of tight conference losses sent Buckeye from the Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division driver’s seat to the sidecar. The first was a 53-49 setback at Wellington. Trailing big early and eventually by 16, Buckeye rallied but fell short at the end despite 18 points from Brock Brumfield. Carter Hudak added 12. Next came a 40-38 loss at Keystone, which led the Bucks by 14 after a quarter but needed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to win. Anthony Watkins scored 13 to lead Buckeye, which took a 12-5 overall record into the week, along with a 9-3 PAC mark. That left the Bucks a game behind Wellington, and tied with Keystone in the loss column. The Wildcats had played two fewer games.
The Bucks had a couple chances this week to bounce back, first on Feb. 6 at home against Clearview, then Feb. 9 at Columbia. They finish regular-season play with games at Black River (Feb. 16) and North Olmsted (Feb. 20), before the final Feb. 23 at home against Wellington , which now looks even bigger than ever.
