To the Editor:
As Quakers (Religious Society of Friends), we believe that there is that of God in every person. Whether they or their ancestors arrived in the United States thousands of years ago, a few generations ago or last month, we are outraged and appalled at the treatment that refugees and immigrants have received in recent months. The separation of children from their families, the unnecessary detention of families, the refusal to grant passports to U.S.-born citizens, the presumption that people not born in this country who wish to come here to ensure their safety and survival do not reflect who we are as a people.

We call on officeholders and candidates for office to artiuclate a policy of compassion toward people whose lives have become untenable in their home country and who have come to our borders seeking asylum. We ask for de-escalation of angry rhetoric that fuels hatred. We ask for respect for people who come to the U.S. and an efficient process for deciding who qualifies as a refugee. Finally, we ask Congress to do its job and create legislation that responds to the realities of today’s world and acknowledges that refugees and immigrants are a source of the creativity and diversity that make America great.
