bird sightings

Recent bird sightings as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society:

Weak winds stalled spring migration last week, but the next major surge of migrants may come this week when the winds are expected to pick up. Be on the lookout for rarer migrants like Cape May, bay-breasted, and Tennessee warblers, as well as the increased presence of thrushes, vireos, and tanagers.

Plum Island: At Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, high counts of migratory birds included five veeries, 27 northern waterthrush, three blackburnian warblers, two Cape May warblers, 10 chestnut-sided warblers, five field sparrows, and hundreds of white-throated sparrows. Also present were 26 brant and 20 long-tailed ducks.

Nantucket: At Madaket were a hooded warbler, a summer tanager, and a blue grosbeak. At least two continuing snowy owls were spotted at various sites on the island.

Miscellaneous: Sightings include more than 100 common loons on Wachusett Reservoir in Worcester County, single worm-eating warblers at the Public Garden in Boston and at Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, and a marbled godwit outside of Joppa Flats Nature Center in Newburyport.
