Betts drops 15 pounds due to illness; status for domestic opener uncertain

LOS ANGELES>> Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts is still dealing with an illness and his return remains uncertain. Betts, who missed the Dodgers’ first two games of the regular season at the Tokyo Dome last week and was sent back to Los Angeles to continue recovering, was a late scratch for Sunday’s exhibition win against the Los Angeles Angels.

Betts says he hasn’t been able to keep down solid food without vomiting for two weeks and has lost about 15 pounds. Betts won’t play in Monday’s exhibition at Angel Stadium, and he’s a long shot for the Dodgers’ opening game on American soil Thursday against Detroit.

Former UFC champion Velasquez sentenced to 5 years for 2022 shooting

LOS ANGELES>> Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez has been sentenced to five years in prison for a shooting in 2022 where he chased after the man accused of molesting his son. Velasquez was sentenced Monday after he pled no contest to attempted murder and other charges last year.

In February 2022, the two-time UFC heavyweight champion fired a gun multiple times at a truck carrying three people, including 46-year-old Harry Goularte, who is facing felony child molestation charges. Goularte was uninjured, but his stepfather, who was driving, was hit twice.

Former NFL, college assistant pleads not guilty to hacking women’s photos

DETROIT>> A judge has entered a not-guilty plea for a former Baltimore Ravens and University of Michigan assistant football coach.

Matt Weiss is charged with hacking into the computer accounts of thousands of college athletes to find intimate images, primarily of women.

Weiss’ appearance in federal court in Detroit was brief and came four days after the indictment was filed. He’s accused of unauthorized computer access and identity theft, from 2015 until early 2023. Weiss and and his attorney declined to comment outside court.

Father of World Indoor champ goes on trial, accused of abusing son

SANDNES, Norway>> The father of Norwegian middle-distance runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen has gone on trial accused of violently abusing his superstar son.

Jakob, 24, spent the weekend underlining his position as one of the world’s finest athletes by winning gold medals in the 3,000 meters and 1500 meters at the World Indoor Championships in China.

His father Gjert, who used to coach his son, could face up to six years in jail over an alleged 14-year campaign of domestic abuse, which also involved Jakob’s younger sister.

Sacramento State to hire former King Bibby as coach

Former Kings star Mike Bibby will be hired as the basketball coach at Sacramento State. That’s according to a person familiar with the decision. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move wasn’t scheduled to be announced until Tuesday.

Bibby won an NCAA title as a player at Arizona in 1997 and then starred in the NBA for 14 seasons, with his biggest success coming in seven seasons with the Kings.

Bibby retired in 2012 and has experience coaching in high school in Arizona but has not coached above that level.
