Giancarlo Mendo won three individual events, and Watsonville High’s boys track and field team beat host North Monterey County 78-58 in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division meet Wednesday.

Mendo took first in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 5.46 seconds, 1,600 (4:45.97) and 3,200 (10:24.21).

Ruben Mora also won three events for the Wildcatz (1-0). He took first in the 110 high hurdles (17.64) and 300 intermediate hurdles (42.35), and teamed with Isaac Urbina, Patrick Miller-Brown, and Jose Pena to win the 1,600 relay (3:49.86).

Watsonville’s Nathan Aguilar took first in the high jump (5 feet, 9 inches) and triple jump (38-8.5), Alex Paniagua won the 100 (11.84) and 200 (23.84), and Lisandro Pantoja won the discus (117-0).

Santa Lucia Cluster Meet No. 1 >> Monte Vista Christian senior Connor Pallott won the 100 (11.56) and 200 (23.24) at the PCAL Santa Lucia Division cluster meet at Pajaro Valley High on Wednesday.

The Mustangs also received wins from senior Trent Hendricks (400; 55.53), and sophomores Conor Gilliam (800; 2:02.49) and Gavin Beckmen (1,600; 4:59.31). MVC also took first in the 4×100 relay (44.86) and 4×400 relay (3:45.10).

Pajaro Valley senior Isaiah Ybarra won the 110 hurdles (19.84) and 300 hurdles (49.27), and classmate Jesse Rodriguez took first in the 3,200 (11:23.78). Grizzlies junior Izaak Ocampo won the long jump (20-2.25).

Pacific Collegiate senior Andre Tse won the shot put (38-8) and discus (139-10).

St. Francis sophomore Robert Gomez won the high jump (5-4) and classmate Coy Jordan won the triple jump (38-10).

Girls track and field

At NMC 77, Watsonville 59 >> Katelynn Ruiz earned four event wins, but the Wildcatz dropped their PCAL Mission Division meet in Castroville on Wednesday.

Ruiz took first in the 800 (2:35.09), 1,600 (5:43.99), and 3,200 (12:19.50) and teamed with Lizbeth Gomez, Aileen Reyes and Jocelyn Guzman for the win in the 1,600 relay (4:31.32).

Guzman also won the 300 low hurdles (51.26) for the Wildcatz (0-1).

Watsonville’s Evangelina Gaona took first in the long jump (13-6.5), triple jump (30-9.5) and high jump (4-6). Teammate Jayleen Arredondo won the pole vault (8-0).

Santa Lucia Cluster Meet No. 1 >> MVC freshman Finley Castro, sophomore teammate Ashley Drago, and St. Francis sophomore Peyton Orradre each won two events at the PCAL Santa Lucia Division cluster meet at Pajaro Valley High on Wednesday.

Castro won the 800 (2:39.74) and 1,600 (5:50.28), and Drago won the 400 (1:06.89) and long jump (15-5). Orradre won the 100 hurdles (17.95) and high jump (4-4).

St. Francis senior teammate Aaliysah Gomez won the triple jump (31-8). MVC juniors Madison Bandy (100, 13.65) and Kylie Brunelli (3,200; 12:07.75) also earned wins.

Kirby junior Lucia Nakashima won the 200 (28.60), and PCS won the 4×100 relay (56.46).

Archbishop Mitty at St. Ignatius >> Monarchs junior Evie Marheineke, a Santa Cruz resident, took first in the 1,600 (5:19) and sophomore teammate Alessia Carbone, a Scotts Valley resident, took second in 5:31 in the team’s West Catholic Athletic League dual meet in San Francisco on Wednesday.

Carbone also placed second in the 800.

The Monarchs host Riordan and Sacred Heart Prep on March 27.

Surfing

Barbados Surf Pro >> Santa Cruz’s Sam Coffey won a pair of heats Tuesday to advance in the World Surf League’s BTMI Barbados Surf Pro, a Qualifying Series 5,000-point event at Soup Bowl in Bathsheba, Barbados.

Competing in 25-minute heats in 1- to 4-foot waves, Coffey won Heat 1 in the Round of 96 with a two-wave score of 13.00, and Heat 1 of the Round of 64 with a 10.87 total.

He’ll compete against Tyler Gunter, Cole McCaffray, and Kyan Yang in Heat 1 of the Round of 32 when action resumes.

Live Like Zander Junior Pro >> Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller and Capitola’s Olivia Storrer advanced to the quarterfinals at the WSL’s Live Like Zander Junior Pro In Loving Memory Zander Venezia, 1,000-point Junior Tour event at Soup Bowl in Bathsheba, Barbados.

In the Round of 32 on Thursday, Miller won Heat 6 with a two-wave total score of 12.24, and Storrer won Heat 7 with a 13.17 total in 1- to 4-foot waves.

Capitola’s Maddie Storrer (3.10) took third in Heat 4 and was eliminated. She placed 17th overall.

Girls lacrosse

Scotts Valley 10, at Carmel 7 >> Midfielders Sofia Niklaus and Skylar Dufour, both team captains, led a fierce charge to rally the Falcons from a 5-0 deficit in their win Wednesday.

Scotts Valley trailed 5-4 at the half and entered the fourth holding a 9-6 lead.

Niklaus finished with six goals, two assists, and nine draw possessions, including two draw controls. Dufour had three goals, two assists, and six draw controls. First-year player Serena Sanford-Brantley scored off a rebound.

“The defense once again played stellar shutdown defense after the initial breakdown of the first quarter,” said Falcons coach Colleen Niklaus, singling out defenders Claire Skinner, Stella Cheney, Hanna Shehorn, and Campbell Flores, and midfielders Dillon Fiorita, Niklaus, and Dufour for their play.

Scotts Valley (4-0) was scheduled to play at Soquel on Thursday evening, after the Sentinel went to press.

MVC 12, Santa Catalina 6 >> Kyra Driscoll had six goals, one assist and seven draw controls in the Mustangs’ win Wednesday at Carmel High.

Sophia Sheridan had two goals and five assists for the Mustangs, and goalie Jana Bacero-Duncan made nine saves.

MVC (6-3) hosts Valley Christian on Friday at 5 p.m.

High school baseball

At Soledad 11, Watsonville 2 >> Rudy Valdez had two hits and scored a run in the Wildcatz’s PCAL loss Wednesday.

Mateo Lopez doubled, drove in one run, and scored a run for the Wildcatz. Aiden Rodriguez had a hit and RBI.

Winning pitcher Andrew Nichols struck out six batters over five innings. Aztecs sophomore Daniel Valenzuela Jr. had three hits, including a pair of home runs, and four RBI.

Watsonville (1-9, 0-5) host Soledad (8-2, 4-1) on Friday at 5 p.m.
