City seeks applications for City Council
After the Capitola City Council voted May 22 to fill Vice Mayor Alexander Pedersen’s seat by appointment rather than a special election, the city is now seeking applications for the City Council.
Capitola residents who are registered voters and at least 18 years of age are invited to apply for potential appointment to City Council to serve until December 2026. Interested residents can find an application at www.CityofCapitola.org. Applications will be accepted online or in person at Capitola City Hall until 5 p.m. June 3.
Members of the Capitola City Council attend two regular council meetings per month, typically on the second and fourth Thursdays at 6 p.m. They are also appointed to serve on regional boards, commissions, and subcommittees that typically meet monthly. Councilmembers receive a monthly stipend of $660 for their service.
The City Council will review applications, deliberate and appoint a councilmember during the June 12 meeting. Applicants must attend the meeting in person. The selected applicant will be sworn in during the meeting and will commence councilmember responsibilities immediately after. As always, this meeting will be open to the public and available to watch live on community television, the city website and on YouTube.

Genealogy virtual lecture scheduled
Sign up to attend the online lecture “Creating an Ancestor Profile” hosted by the Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Public Libraries at 1 p.m. June 3. Thomas MacEntee (author, educator, advocate, entrepreneur) will be the featured guest speaker.
Most genealogists never get around to publishing that family history book based on their genealogy research. How about a different approach: producing short three- to five-page sketches about an ancestor? During this program, you’ll learn how to include a cover, photos, facts, family stories, source citations and more. And once you get a few of these ancestor sketches done, you can compile them together for one big book.
