Sacramento Kings guard Zach LaVine and other NBA stars are thinking about challenging three-time reigning champion Mac McClung in the slam dunk contest next year at All-Star Weekend in Inglewood.

Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and LaVine all hinted at the idea on social media after McClung won the event for the third year in a row Saturday at Chase Center in San Francisco.

Morant started the discussion, tweeting “mac might make me decide to dunk” and “zach AG (Aaron Gordon) wassup.”

Antetokounmpo responded: “If you do it. I’ll do it with you.”

LaVine, a two-time slam dunk contest champion, quote tweeted Morant, saying: “Thinking I might have too again….”

Morant, a two-time All-Star, has never participated in the dunk contest. Antetokounmpo, a nine-time All-Star and two-time MVP, competed in 2015. LaVine, a two-time All-Star, won back-to-back championships in 2015 and 216.

LaVine, 29, defeated Victor Oladipo in the finals in 2015. The following year, LaVine defeated Aaron Gordon in the finals in one of the most memorable dunk contests of all time.

LaVine recently came to Sacramento as part of the three-team trade that sent De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs and Kevin Huerter to the Chicago Bulls. LaVine is averaging 23.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists in his 11th NBA season after coming out of UCLA as the No. 13 pick in the 2014 NBA draft. The slam dunk has lacked star power in recent years, but the event has a rich history with memorable performances from some of the game’s all-time greats.

In 1985, Dominique Wilkins beat Michael Jordan, who was a rookie with the Chicago Bulls. A year later, Wilkins lost to 5-foot-7 Spud Webb. Jordan took flight from the free-throw line to defeat beat Wilkins in 1988. In 2000, Vince Carter turned in perhaps the most spectacular performance in dunk contest history to defeat Steve Francis and Tracy McGrady.
