The Los Angeles Dodgers activated slugger Freddie Freeman off the injured list Friday after he missed nine games with a right ankle injury that resulted from slipping in the shower at home.
Freeman said an MRI showed fraying of the scar tissue in his surgically repaired ankle, but he was back to running bases a few days ago.
“I hate to say it, but I might have needed the 10 days,” said Freeman, who loathes missing games. “I feel the best I’ve felt since I’ve gotten hurt.”
The 35-year-old first baseman was set to bat fourth in the series opener against the Chicago Cubs on his bobblehead night.
The World Series MVP has played in just three games so far. Freeman has batted .250 with two home runs and four RBI.
Freeman slipped and fell on March 30 in what he called a “freak accident.”
Utilityman Kiké Hernández filled in at first during Freeman’s absence.
“When you lose Freddie to have a backfill like Kiki has been huge for us,” manager Dave Roberts said. “Certainly in preventing runs and making plays defensively.”
Tigers activate Torres from injured list
Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres returned to the team’s lineup on Friday after being sidelined by a left oblique strain.
Torres was activated from the 10-day injured list before the opener of a three-game series at Minnesota. He was playing second base and leading off for the matchup with the Twins.
Torres signed a $15 million, one-year contract with Detroit in December. He went 3 for 7 with a home run in the first two games of the season before going on the IL.
Cronenworth goes on IL with rib fracture
The San Diego Padres placed infielder Jake Cronenworth on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a right rib fracture. The IL stint was made retroactive to Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Cronenworth is batting .257 with two homers and five RBIs in 12 games this season. The two-time All-Star hit .241 with 17 homers and 83 RBIs in 155 games in 2024.
Angels place Joyce on IL with hurt shoulder
The Los Angeles Angels placed right-handed reliever Ben Joyce on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, with inflammation in his throwing shoulder.
Joyce is 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA in five appearances this season. Los Angeles recalled right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Joyce’s spot on the roster.
Royals reliever Harvey goes on injured list
The Kansas City Royals placed reliever Hunter Harvey on the 15-day disabled list on Friday because of a right shoulder injury.
The team said Harvey is dealing with a strain of the teres muscle in the shoulder, which was revealed by an MRI.
White Sox call up top prospect Meidroth
The Chicago White Sox brought up infielder Chase Meidroth from Triple-A Charlotte and placed left-hander Fraser Ellard on the 15-day injured list.
Meidroth, one of the team’s top prospects, was slated to make his major league debut in the opener of a weekend series against Boston.
