Late Thursday morning, it was Walker-Hackensack-Akeley’s turn to be introduced to what the Goodhue girls basketball team does.

It’s all legal, but it’s a lot: full-court pressure defense, sprinting and sprawling athletes, plenty of 3-pointers, and end-to-end fast breaks.

As usual, Goodhue did all of that Thursday and it all worked, this time to eighth-seeded Walker-Hackensack-Akeley’s demise. The Wildcats walked away from their Class 1A quarterfinal game at the University of Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion an easy 76-47 winner.

Next up for No. 1 ranked and top-seeded seeded Goodhue is a semifinal game at 12 p.m. Friday against fourth-seeded West Central Area.

If required to pick one thing that bothered Walker-Hackensack-Akeley most, it would be Goodhue’s hell-bent, trapping defense. It drove W-H-A wild with it, as the Wildcats (25-5) forced 14 first-half Wolves turnovers and had them shooting a miserable 2-for-19 from the field the first 18 minutes.

Class 1A Quarterfinals

MACCRAY 55, Mayer Lutheran 51 >> MACCRAY upset No. 2 Mayer Lutheran in a Class A quarterfinal game at the Maturi Pavilion.

The seventh-seeded Wolverines, making their first state tournament appearance since 2006 took a 52-49 lead with 2:15 to play on a Samantha Hultgren 3-pointer.

The Crusaders (26-4) were unable to turn away MACCRAY from there, losing by four points.

West Central 61, Cromwell-Wright 54 >> No. 4 West Central Area beat No. 5 Cromwell-Wright at the Maturi Pavilion behind 17 points from Mya Foslien.

Leading 24-20 at halftime, the Knights (25-6) created some separation with a 9-0 run to take a 39-29 lead. But the Cardinals (25-5) chipped away and tied it with Isabella Anderson’s rebound and coast-to-coast layup with 2:43 to go. However, a Foslien 3-pointer on the next possession that squashed the Cromwell-Wright rally.

Class 3A Semifinal

Benilde-St. Margaret’s 60, Alexandria Area 52 >> Top-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s took another step toward a three-peat by downing fifth-seeded Alexandria Area at Williams Arena.

Sydney Friedly scored 20 points to pace the Red Knights (25-6). Benilde-St. Margaret’s lead was rarely in jeopardy against the Cardinals (25-5).
