Quarterback Matthew Stafford is staying with the Los Angeles Rams under a restructured contract, ending weeks of speculation about the Super Bowl winner’s future.
The Rams announced their new agreement with Stafford on Friday without initially revealing any details.
The 37-year-old Stafford had two years left on the four-year, $160 million contract extension he signed in 2022, shortly after leading Los Angeles to a championship in his first season with the team.
But his $27 million salary for the upcoming season was significantly less than the compensation for most quarterbacks of Stafford’s stature, and the deal had only $4 million in guaranteed money remaining in 2025 and none in 2026.
Stafford passed for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns last season for the Rams, who went 10-7 and won the NFC West before reaching the divisional round of the playoffs, where they lost a close road game to eventual champion Philadelphia.
The Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Giants were among the teams widely reported to be interested in trading for Stafford, even discussing the framework of a potential new contract with Stafford’s agent.
The Rams also agreed with left tackle Alaric Jackson on a three-year, $57 million deal to stay with L.A.
Rodgers among QB options for Giants >> Aaron Rodgers, 41, is now one of several veteran options the New York Giants are interested in, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
Rodgers is still on the New York Jets roster, but the organization announced on Feb. 13 that it was moving on from the four-time NFL MVP after two seasons. The move is expected to be designated as a post-June 1 release.
However, that doesn’t mean Rodgers is necessarily leaving Gotham.
The Giants, who currently house Tommy DeVito as the only QB on their roster, had interest in obtaining Matthew Stafford, but are now pivoting with their sights apparently set on Rodgers.

Knapp goes from a 59 to a 70 but keep lead >> Jake Knapp was 11 shots worse than his opening round at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and still stayed in front, curling in a 15-foot birdie putt on his final hole for a 1-under 70 and a one-shot lead over Matthieu Pavon.
Knapp, who made 12 birdies Thursday for the 15th round of 59 or lower on the PGA Tour, went 10 holes without a birdie. He had a double bogey when his tee shot found the water. One of his better shots hit a sprinkler cap and bounced 40 yards away.
Whitnell makes two holes-in-one in same round >> Dale Whitnell made two holes-in-one in the same round at the South African Open, having entered the day worrying about just making the cut at the European tour event.
The 36-year-old Englishman aced the par-3 second and 12th holes at the Durban Country Club in a wild 9-under 63 second round that included an eagle, seven birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey.
“I was struggling to make the cut so I knew I needed to go out and play well and got off to a hot start as they would say,” said Whitnell, ranked No. 545.
“Birdied the first and then hit a flush 7-iron on the second and didn’t realize it went in until down the bottom they sort of cheered. That was lovely.”
Whitnell then eagled the par-5 third and would have to wait a whopping nine holes for his second ace.
“I’ve never had one in tournament play. To have two in one day is pretty special,” he said, a day after shooting a level-par 72 in the opening round.
According to the National Hole-in-One Registry, the odds of making a hole-in-one twice in the same round are 67 million to 1.
Ko in contention at LPGA Singapore >> Olympic gold medalist and LPGA Hall of Famer Lydia Ko moved to within a shot of the lead with a 5-under 67 after two rounds of the HSBC Women’s World Championship.
The South Korean-born New Zealander had a two-round total of 6-under 138 on the Tanjong course at Sentosa Golf Club. A Lim Kim held the lead after 36 holes with a 69.
