Sarah Strong added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Huskies (24-3), who had lost their past four to the Gamecocks. Paige Bueckers had 12 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds as UConn took control late in the opening quarter and was up by 22 points by halftime.
Uncharacteristically, defending champion South Carolina could not respond and lost for the first time at home since North Carolina State beat the Gamecocks 54-46 on Dec. 3, 2020. That ended the fourth longest home winning streak ever in women’s Division I basketball history.
No. 3 Texas rally past No. 5 LSU >> Madison Booker scored 16 points, including four consecutive free throws in the final 24 seconds, and No. 3 Texas overcame a woeful shooting start to rally for a 65-58 victory over No. 5 LSU.
Texas was just 7 of 37 shooting in the first half and trailed by as much as 12 in the third quarter. Booker, the Longhorns’ leading scorer this season, missed all 11 shot attempts in the first half after averaging nearly 21 points over the previous nine games.
Men’s basketball
Michigan State’s Izzo sets record for most Big Ten wins late Saturday >> Michigan State’s Tom Izzo followed one of the most disappointing losses of his coaching career with a record-setting victory.
The No. 11 Spartans came from behind to beat Illinois 79-65 on Saturday night for Izzo’s 354th career Big Ten victory, breaking former Indiana coach Bob Knight’s record of 353 conference wins.
Izzo tied Knight on Feb. 8 when Michigan State rallied in the second half to defeat Oregon 86-74.
The Spartans failed badly in their first attempt to get the milestone victory for their coach, losing 71-67 at home to Indiana and lame-duck coach Mike Woodson.
Running
Ugandan Kiplimo breaks half marathon record >> Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo set a men’s half-marathon word record on Sunday and also became the first runner to go under 57 minutes.
The 24-year-old Kiplimo set a time of 56 minutes, 41 seconds at a road race in Barcelona, smashing the previous record of 57:30 by Ethiopian distance runner Yomif Kejelcha last year in the Spanish city of Valencia.
World Athletics said it was the greatest single improvement on the men’s half-marathon record, and that Kiplimo benefited from ideal weather conditions of 13 degrees Celsius (55 Fahrenheit) with no wind.
NBA
Mavs assistant arrested for aggrevated assault >> The Dallas Mavericks said they have suspended an employee they didn’t identify amid a report that assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Dallas television station WFAA cited multiple law enforcement sources in reporting that Dallas police responded to a call in the predawn hours Saturday. The sources said the 56-year-old Armstrong and the victim were arguing when he hit the woman with a gun and threatened to shoot her.
Armstrong spent two seasons with the Mavericks late in his 14-year playing career and was a backup point guard on the 2005-06 team that reached the NBA Finals, losing to Miami. He is in his 10th full season as a Dallas assistant.

More massage therapists come out against Ravens’ Tucker >> Seven more massage therapists have accused Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker of sexually inappropriate conduct, the Baltimore Banner reported Sunday.
The Banner first reported allegations against Tucker late last month, saying it had spoken with six massage therapists who recounted firsthand experiences with him. The number of accusers has more than doubled since.

Yankees Stanton has tendinitis in both elbows >> New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is uncertain for opening day because of tendinitis in both elbows.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone made the announcement as position players reported ahead of the first full-squad workout.
Asked whether it could impact Stanton’s availability for the March 27 opener against Milwaukee, Boone responded: “Tough to say.”
Skiing
Meillard wins second gold in Men’s Slalom >> Loic Meillard won gold in the men’s slalom at the Alpine skiing world championships.
The Swiss skier beat silver medalist Atle Lie McGrath of Norway by 0.26 seconds. Linus Strasser of Germany was 0.52 behind in third and took the bronze.
Olympic champion Clement Noel, who led after the first run, straddled a gate near the end of his second run and did not finish.
