Earth Day returns Tuesday, and during the global environmental event people are asked to think about nature and our planet and what they can do to help. That could include volunteering to clean up parks or beaches, or just learning more about nature and ways to support it

Here are 10 things you can do in honor of Earth Day.

Akoma Unity Center’s Earth Day Family Fun Celebration

Gardening workshops, kite-making classes, face painting and earthworm composting.

City of Irvine Earth Day event

The gathering will include guided hikes and demonstrations of composting and solar energy.

City of Upland Earth and Arbor Day Celebration

Games, educational booths, paper shredding and e-waste recycling, plus mulch and compost giveaways.

Costa Mesa Earth Day Fair

Free compost, talks about local plant and animal species, kids games, raffle prizes and tree planting.

Earth Day at the Bay

The free community event will feature environmentally themed exhibits, arts and crafts, live music throughout the day, a scavenger hunt and food trucks.

Earth Day Teen Climate Fest

This event was created by teens and features booths, displays, and workshops on growing, eating and distributing food.

Malibu Earth Day hikes

The city is hosting a pair of free, docent-led hikes in honor of Earth Day starting Saturday with “Walking in the Footsteps of the Chumash,” which takes participants on a 90-minute jaunt through areas where Native Americans lived. Then on April 25 hikers can check out the trails as the sun goes down with a sunset hike through the park.

Natural History Museum Earth Day Festival

The day is packed with activities that include a presentation on the science of SpongeBob Squarepants, a plant sale, animals, live music and a presentation on monarch butterflies.

Riverside Insect Fair

This is always a popular event where kids and adults can see and touch all sorts of bugs like beetles and butterflies. Kids can also learn how to start their own bug collections.

South Bay Parkland Conservancy’s Community Earth Day

A nature walk, seminars, booths with activities, crafts, information about local environmental groups and music are planned at this free gathering.
