Monterey Georgette Beyah, lovingly referred to as Yaya, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, in Sacramento, California, just days shy of her 74th birthday. Born on October 18, 1950, Georgette was a vibrant spirit who touched the lives of many with her kindness, faith, strength, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Georgette grew up in a loving household, in Monterey California with her parents Geroge and Ophelia WInston, and her sister Diane Bismillah (Winston). She was a proud graduate of Monterey High School, where she forged lifelong friendships.
On January 16, 1976 she married her life partner Ira Beyah (McFarland). As a devoted wife and mother to her children, she instilled in them the importance of faith in Allah, and family unity. She later embraced her role as a grandmother, cherishing every moment spent with her grandsons, who brought her immense joy and happiness.
Georgette worked at Monterey County Juvenile Detention Center for 23 years. Throughout her life, Georgette was a passionate advocate for social justice, dedicating herself to uplifting her community. She volunteered for several years at the Monterey County voting locations. In addition, she devoted an immense amount of time nurturing her faith at the Masjid Waritheen in Oakland, where she served as the treasurer in the Womens of Masjidul Waritheen group. Georgette's warmth and compassion resonated with everyone she met, and she was known for her infectious laughter and ability to bring people together.
Georgette is survived by her husband of 48 years Ira Beyah, children, Ira “Bubba” and Hassan Beyah (Kelsey); her beloved grandchildren, Naim Beyah-Adams Tyson Beyah, Isaiah Beyah Khayri Beyah Kairo Beyah, her niece Tamar Collins (Bismillah), and a host of nieces, nephews, step-sons, and friends who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George W. and Ophelia Winston, her sister, Diane M. Bismillah-Henson, her daughter, Ifraj Beyah, her son Trevor Winston, her niece Tonya Bismillah, her nephew Askia Bismillah.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday October 12th, 2024, at the Retired Men’s Club in Seaside 2087 Del Monte Ave, starting at 1:00pm. Family and friends are invited to share their memories and stories of a woman who inspired so many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to 443 Casanova Ave. Monterey, CA 93940.
Georgette will be remembered for her unyielding spirit, her love for her family, and her dedication to making the world a better place. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and hope that will continue to inspire generations to come.
