Norman L. Welch, MD, age 94, died at a Hospice facility in Colorado.
He was born in Owosso, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan where he received his medical degree in 1956.
He then moved to Colorado and did his internship and pathology residency at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver. He also served in the US Air Force as a general medical officer for 2 years.
After a few years as an associate pathologist at Presbyterian Hospital, he moved to Muskegon, Michigan to serve as the Chief Pathologist and Director of Laboratories at Mercy Hospital. During his 30 years there he also served as the President of the Muskegon County Medical Society and as Chief of the Medical Staff, also doing a lot of volunteer work with the Red Cross.
He retired to Vail, Colorado where he and his wife Margot lived for 17 years. His latest move was to Broomfield, Colorado to be closer to his daughter and her family. He loved attending the musical performances and sporting events that Sam, Jack, and Cora participated in.
Over the years he enjoyed hiking, skiing, sailing, flying small planes, and kayaking.
He loved listening to jazz. One of the favorite adventures of his life was the time he took a one year sabbatical and spent it on his Freedom 40 sailboat with his wife and two younger children. They sailed from Muskegon to Martinique.
Dr. Welch is survived by Margot, his wife of 55 years, and their children Kimberly Eikenberry (Bill) of Denver and Daniel Welch of Washington State, as well as his children of a previous marriage: Laurie Barnard (Grant) of Montana, Mike Welch (Jane) of California, Lisa Erickson (Dave) of Minnesota, Rob Welch (Jamee) of Michigan, and Doug Welch of Florida. His brother, Phil lives in Michigan. He also leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A celebration of life for family is planned for next summer at Rocky Mountain National Park where his ashes will be spread.
