SAN JOSE >> The San Jose Sharks executed another stunning trade deadline deal Friday, sending winger Fabian Zetterlund, minor league forward Tristen Robins and a fourth round draft pick to the Ottawa Senators for forwards Zach Ostapchuk, Noah Gregor and a 2025 second round draft pick.

Zetterlund, who turns 26 in August, was believed to be an important piece to the Sharks’ future. Following the Sharks’ game against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, the right-shot Zetterlund had 17 goals and 36 points, fourth most on the team. Last season, Zetterlund led the Sharks with 24 goals.

Zetterlund is a pending restricted free agent in need of a new contract, as he’s in the final year of a two-year, $2.9 million deal he signed with the Sharks on July 1, 2023.

Per a source, the Sharks offered Zetterlund a new contract earlier this year, but Zetterlund’s camp wanted to wait until after the season. The Sharks recently circled back on contract extension talks, and Zetterlund’s camp countered with their own offer a few days ago.

It was unclear if that counteroffer played a role in Friday’s trade.

During training camp, Zetterlund told Bay Area News Group he wanted to remain a Shark long-term.

“I love this place. I love the city,” Zetterlund said in October. “I love everything about it, so of course I want to stay here for a long time.”

“Surprised,” a source said.

The Zetterlund trade put a bow on an hectic few days for Sharks general manager Mike Grier, who sent five players to contending teams this week.

Thursday night, the Sharks traded defenseman Jake Walman to the Edmonton Oilers for a conditional 2026 first-round draft pick and minor league forward Carl Berglund.

Before the Zetterlund trade, the Sharks sent forward Luke Kunin to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2025 fourth-round pick that initially belonged to the St. Louis Blues.
