Jase Richardson played college ball for his dad’s alma mater. Now, he’ll be playing for an NBA organization he played for, too.
The Orlando Magic selected Richardson at No. 25 in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday. The 19-year-old guard who calls Miami home is Michigan State’s first draft pick in three years.
A one-and-done didn’t seem likely at the start of Richardson’s freshman year, but he excelled down the stretch and became Michigan State’s clear-cut difference-maker by the end of the year. He averaged 12.1 points per game throughout the season as an efficient shooter and crafty playmaker, contributing 16.1 points per game once he became a starter in early February, leading the Spartans to a Big Ten championship and Elite Eight NCAA Tournament run.
Richardson is the second in his family to be drafted, joining his father, Jason, who went fifth overall to Golden State in 2001. He played for five NBA teams in his career, including parts of two seasons with the Magic from 2010-12. The younger Richardson is the 24th player in the Tom Izzo era to be drafted to the NBA, the first since Max Christie went to the Los Angeles Lakers with a second-round pick in 2022. Richardson is MSU’s first-round pick since Jaren Jackson Jr. and Miles Bridges both were selected in 2018.
Orlando is a team on the upswing after going through a long rebuild.
The team made back-to-back playoff appearances the past two seasons, at the hands of Cleveland and Boston, respectively, but are built from a talented young core. Guard Jalen Suggs and forwards Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner (Michigan) lead its core, with a number of young prospects developing including last year’s draft pick Tristan da Silva and former Michigan stars Jett Howard and Caleb Houstan. It’s an up-and-coming environment friendly to a prospect like Richardson, and his shooting ability could aid him in making a difference at the NBA level.
