




Kaiden Hoapili had three hits, three RBI, and scored a run, and Cabrillo College’s baseball team beat visiting Monterey Peninsula 10-5 in the teams’ Coast Conference South Division finale Thursday.
With the win, the Seahawks (18-21, 11-9) bettered their chances of securing an at-large berth into the upcoming CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs. The playoff field will be revealed Sunday.
“We were 8-2 in our last 10 games,” said Seahawks coach Scott Masik. “We found a way to use all our our pieces and came together as a team.”
Truett Ross had two hits, two RBI, and scored a run for the Seahawks, who finish the regular season in third place behind repeat champion West Valley (31-9, 17-3) and runner-up Ohlone (31-9, 14-6). Cabrillo was responsible for all three of the Vikings’ division losses.Carlos Cruz and Diego Grabiel each had two hits, one RBI, and scored a run for Cabrillo. Jayson Schmeisser had a hit, walk, RBI, and scored twice, and Jacob Fiorenza had a hit, RBI, and run scored.
Rey Avila and Nate Rutledge each had two hits and one RBI to lead the fourth-place Lobos (20-19, 8-12).
Biola University-bound sophomore pitcher Oscar Knapp (4-6) led the Seahawks to wins in five of his past six starts and picked up the decision in four of those games.
Knapp gave up five hits, one walk, two runs, one earned, over six innings. He struck out five batters.
Losing pitcher Dominic Tomasi was tagged for three runs over two innings of middle relief.
Men’s volleyball
Ownbey honored >> UC Santa Cruz sophomore middle blocker Kyle Ownbey was named an AVCA All-America honorable mention honoree after recording the best hitting percentage in program history (.497). He recorded 194 kills with a 2.06 kills per set average through 27 matches (94 sets) for UCSC. He also made 49 total blocks.

At San Lorenzo Valley 17, Santa Cruz 5; 5 inn. >> Senior Angie Fulkerson drew two walks and hit a grand slam in the Cougars’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win Thursday.
Senior Abigale Krepelka, who is committed to Beloit College in Wisconsin, had three hits, including two doubles, three RBI, and scored three runs for the Cougars (8-6, 6-2). Junior Sophia Sarmiento doubled, triple, had four RBI, and scored twice. Freshman Elie Colby had a hit, drew two walks, and scored three runs. Sophomore Grace Purtcher had two hits, one walk, two RBI, and scored a run.
Junior Maddy Murphy and freshman Bailey Filice each had a hit, one walk, and two runs scored.
Poppy Coursey had two hits and one RBI for the Cardinals (6-10, 4-4). Molly Pisciotta had two RBI and scored a run.
Purtcher earned the complete-game win.

Sophomore Lorelei Warner had two hits and scored twice for the Falcons (12-5-1, 5-1). Senior Gracie Delgado had a hit, two RBI, and scored a run. Senior Jazzy Doubek had a double and two RBI. Junior Bella Williams had two hits and scored a run.
Senior Sofie Seese struck out 11 batters and earned the complete game win. She gave up four hits, two walks, and one earned run.

Freshman Addie Boles had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI for the Mustangs (8-11, 2-8). Junior Juliana Lopez had two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Junior Samantha Bertoldi scored twice.
Freshman Lily Beals had three hits, three RBI, and scored three runs to pace the Padres (12-4, 8-2).

Aptos 6, at SLV 1 >> Isaiah Work had three hits, including a double, and scored twice in the Mariners’ SCCAL win Thursday.
Damien Espinoza had two hits and scored a run for the Mariners (7-11, 4-5). Adam Ayon hit an RBI double, and Alec Mendoza had a hit and drove in a run.
Winning pitcher Jason Yager gave up three hits, five walks, and one run over six innings and struck out 10 batters. Espinoza threw a scoreless seventh inning.
Jaden Shabry, Larrabee Mitchell, and Bennett Woolfolk each had a hit for the Cougars (2-15, 0-9). Sean Johnson scored SLV’s lone run.

Central Coast Classic >> St. Francis beat host Pioneer Valley 7-2 for its first win at Central Coast Classic in Santa Maria on Thursday afternoon.
The Sharks lost 3-2 to Cabrillo in nine innings on Wednesday and 9-5 to Maranatha at Pioneer Valley on Thursday morning.
Jacob Fonseca had two hits and two RBI in the Sharks’ win. Max Madrigal had one hit, two RBI, and scored a run. Noah Magana had three hits and scored a run. Javier Fonseca had a hit and scored twice.
Nash Horton had two hits and scored twice in the Sharks’ loss to Maranatha. Javier Fonseca had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored.

Soquel 7, at Harbor 0 >> No. 1 Hudson Ward and No. 2 Benjamin Bellito didn’t give up a game in their straight sets wins, and the SCCAL champion Knights wrapped up league play with a 10-0 record Thursday.
The short-handed Pirates defaulted in the other five matches.
The SCCAL Singles and Doubles Championships, a qualifier for the CCS Tournament, will be held at Imperial Courts in Aptos on Tuesday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Santa Cruz 4, at Aptos 3 >> Jeremy Arulanantham, Che Castro, and Sammy Lambert won their singles matches in straight sets to help the Cardinals secure the win and second place in the SCCAL on Thursday.
Ian Burchell and Ethan Romanowsky won at No. 2 doubles for the second-place Cardinals (8-2), who defaulted their match at No. 4 singles.
The third-place Mariners (6-4) earned wins from Isaiah Ackerman and Luve Granstrom at No. 1 doubles and Dylan Wood and Kyler Jones at No. 3 doubles.
Scotts Valley 4, at SLV 2 >> Eli Diamond and Aditya Hannon didn’t drop a game in their straight sets singles wins, and the Falcons (4-8, 4-6) won their SCCAL finale Thursday.
Scotts Valley’s Lincoln Verinsky and Freddy Padilla won 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 2 doubles, and Steve Saji and Jason Krok 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore outside hitter Jake Locatelli had 11 kills and four digs for the Falcons. Junior opposite Will Shanks made five kills, five digs, and four blocks, and senior middle Tito Palma made five kills and three blocks.
At SLV 3, Aptos 0 >> Outside hitter Curtis Hurtado made eight kills and served three aces in the Cougars’ 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 sweep in SCCAL play Thursday.
